Who Makes Cowboy action 38 special Ammunition & Where to Buy

Basic .38Spl 158gn LRN ammo is within the velocity limits needed for shooting in cowboy action. Although it may be stronger than you would like.

By any standard .38spl. as loaded by the factories, is pretty light when loaded with lead 158gr bullets. I can't imagine anyone loading it much lighter. Try a few brands and you will find one that suits your needs.

Call Flora at the Wild West Shooitng Centre in Edmonton. She knows what you need for CAS, and I am sure they will have some130-125 grain loads that will be perfect for CAS. These are loaded at about 700-800 fps from a revolver and have enough energy to activate any properly regulated CAS knockdown, yet have very little recoil allowing fast follow up shots. Do not go below 650fps as you get too close to SASS illegal ammo, and most of the top shooters want the bullet out of the barrel and feedback from the "ding" a little faster than that. Hope this helps.

I likely misspoke when I suggested that factory ammo would be more powerful than he would want. You're very correct in describing factory .38Spl 158gn LRN loads as being quite mild.

I was thinking of them as being stronger than what would be acceptable as a minimal cowboy action load.

In my case I already had some .357 S&W revolvers when I got caught up in the CAS scene. So for me it was a natural to go with the .38/.357 rifle and 1873 revolvers for my CAS efforts. When I began reloading last year I did all my loads to shoot well with my fixed sights S&W Model 10. This turned out to be a fairly soft hitting round that moves at around 800 fps give or take depending on what bullet I stuffed into the cases. I COULD load them up lighter for CAS but frankly I'm in it for the fun. And to me shooting mouse loads from my guns is just not what I want. Having said that there is nothing at all intimadating about the factory 158gn LRN .38Spl. It would be fine for CAS.

That wolf is the best stuff, perhaps you got a bad batch. Also does Winchester not make some brown box loads in 38?

I've used American Eagle 158 grain RN lead. The box says they're about 770fps. They won't be as cheap as the WOLF to be sure.

With your WOLF ones, I'd feel each primer with your finger and sort them into "practice" and "match" boxes.
