Who Says Old Enfields Can't Shoot!!!

My son has an old No4 Mark1 that he has set up to resemble a L39 style post war sniper variant. He shot this 5 shot group which measures .775" yesterday off a bench at 50 yards. Alas we were shooting indoors, hope to be at the 100 yard outdoor range soon. He paid the princly sum of $85.00 for it at a local gun show and added new wood, scope, mount, a new bolt head and a bipod.

This group was no fluke as it was shooting under 1.5" all day. My only claim to fame was that he was shooting my reloads!

The gun has a serial number ending in an"A", which Stratton says means it contains non standard parts. This seems correct as the barrel still has rough lathe marks on it and the bayonet end of the barrel is .007" oversize.

Does anyone know more about these "A" suffix guns?

I have one of the "A" suffix rifles which I asked about not too long ago. I received the same answer as you....and I have a simliar observation...the barrel is not original to the rifle...different diameter and marked with a large "T" on the knoxform. 30XXA.....and "Regulated by Fultons" on the receiver ring. I also wonder if there is some more indepth answer to the "A" in the serial? Great group. Dave

The non-standard part was often something like a wartime expedient safety without the locking notch for the bolt. Parts like this were all replaced post-war generally, so it might be fully in spec now.

That group from an Enfield at 100M would be much more impressive.....I shot one very near to that at 100M with a Parker Bros Target rear sight on a full wood Enfield last weekend.....kinda wish I had taken pics of the target now.....

Nice shooting. What make of scope mount did your son use to mount his scope? Looking at the gun has given me a few ideas.

Take Care

The scope mount is from B Square, the model for No.4 and 5 Lee Enfields. It was easy to put on, you just remove a couple of original screws/pins and use the supplied new ones. I suggest you use Loc Tite on all the screws. The first time he shot it the scope tubes moved a bit, but as a result of some excellent advice from this forum a wee bit of hockey tape under the rings has kept everything in place.

The mount is available at Wholesale Sports.

Hope this helps you.

My brothers will do that at 100yards from a rest, but its been heavly reworked at some time, barrel has a nice sporter front site, but no rear? He paid $200 though(with vintage weaver 4x), but I think its still a good deal, since he was outshooting me with my savage le .308 before I bedded it.

The Lee Enfield was designed to put round holes in square heads. It did that job very well. Good shooting - nice to see someone here is actually doing some shooting.
