Who sells or imports Desert Tech

Umm...no.
There are features that an AI offers that no other action has.

- They use a breaching ring inside the receiver. It is a hardened cylinder which houses the locking lug recesses for the bolt. This is why you can disassemble several AI rifles, mix up the parts, reassemble and they will all headspace. There are AI receivers from the 90's out there that have hundreds of thousands of rounds through them. The armourers just change out the ring and bolt head and they go on indefinitely.

- They use four action screws, everyone else has two.

- The receiver is bonded to the chassis for life. No bedding, it is never coming off.

In addition to those unique features you can change your own barrels/calibers and you get true double stack mags.

No custom offers these features and instead of some cobbled together parts you get an action and system that's been put through the wringer in military service since 1988. Oh and yes the back of the bolt has flutes.
Excellent post J996, you know your AI's.

Ahhhh but that's where you are wrong my friend. SOF forces around the world change equipment non stop in search for the best gear possible. Something bought last week can be replaced this week for some units. And I can all but guarantee that SOF has tried the SRS out. Who knows what they think of it though.

Yeah that's true SOF are more autonomous with their kit.

To be able to switch from short action to a long action is a huge bonus. But, honestly I don't see the need to obsess over doing that in lighting quick speed. People have been doing the multi caliber thing with a vice and action wrench well before it became main stream in the tactical precision rifle world. I like the way the srs covert handles and feels, I bought it for being a bullpup not the fast conversion swaps.

I still think if you want a the compactness of a bullpup and be able to switch calibers in a hurry, the DT SRS is the best bang for the buck. If you are not in a hurry, ie, you want to practice with a lighter 308 one week and move up to a harder hitter the next week, savage is the best bang for the buck. And you are not using proprietary barrels. Feel free to support Canadians and go with true flight and or whatever else you like. As long as you buy a long action version, like the 110 that is.

I think next time I chat with a gunsmith that knows rifles, I am going to ask if he thinks he could make a barrel indexing notch like the DT and other switch barrel rifles. If he could notch the barrel and action and make it work, then no need for a go and no-go gauge. Just pop the barrel nut off, swap the bolt face of a savage bolt, and off to the races. I wouldn't be concerned about mags, because if I am just practicing with a 308, bombing then in single style is no problem.

This can be done on a savage without a gunsmith or the notch. When you set up you barrel and get your headspace set, you put heat release j.b. weld on the threads and tighten the barrel nut down. Once the j.b sets you can remove the barrel with your wrench/action bar and the barrel nut stays fixed. When you put the barrel back on and snug it down it will be at the same head space you set up. I would use a torque wrench to do this so you know it's exactly the same. If its off or you want rebarrel, use a torch to heat the nut and release the barrel nut.

you can swap a savage short action (308) to a long action (338) by just changing the barrel like you say?

No. You have to buy the long action. There is no problem chambering a 'short action' round like .308 in a long action. The bolt face needs to be changed as well. Savage has a floating bolt head that you have to swap out to match your cartridge bolt face size. I guess it's tougher to get the bolt faces in Canada, but not impossible. I think a guy just posted he waited 9 weeks for it to arrive from the US.

I love the idea of the 338lapua being shorter than most made rifles. Thank you to the gents who posted actual info, comments on the ones they own. Interesting stuff but pricey. Hmmmmm! :D

p.s. know anyone who'd trade a DTA 338 for a PGW 50bmg single shot? HAHA :p ;)

next you will be looking to trade the LRT-3 for a DTA HTI.

Yes if you build on a long action. Obviously a 338 lm will not cycle through a short action. As for the bolt head, I ended up building a complete second bolt, so all I had to do was swap the barrel and bolt. I mucked with the feed lips on the long action mags to get reliable feeding for 308 size cases.
It takes some time to get it all sorted initially but once its all sorted out I could swap calibers at the range from short to long action in less then 2 minutes.

Nice to see interest in the DTA SRS!

I can only comment on the SRS as I own one and have not shot an AI. I have owned and still own many custom rifles but I can honestly say that they all just sit in the safe collecting dust since I purchased the SRS through Dlask Arms a year ago, the SRS is an amazing rifle and holds 1/2 MOA all day long in both the 338LM & 7WSM barrels that I have.

I understand the cost implications especially with the current exchange rate, I pondered this for over a year before biting the bullet and now here we are a year later with the SRS, two barrels and a NF ATACR and almost $13K in to the project and I do not regret spending a dime of that money!

The best way to decide if the SRS is for you is to shoot one, PM me if you are in the Red Deer are any time soon an we will make it happen.
