I want to pick the brains of those with more experience than I. I am building a long distance Savage 10 and am planning on shooting 1000 yards eventually. The barrel I got is 27 in 3 groove 1-8 twist Remington Sendaro contour so I know it will shoot. I have been using light bullits up to now and will keep them for my varmint gun but want to know what I should be loading for the paper puncher. I bought some 69g Sierra HPBT as I want to keep the velocity's up and I got them cheap as they were an opened box. Will those keep together well enough or do I need to go heavier if I want to hit 1k. Also what powder, brass and primers do you guys use. Guess I want to just be pointed in the right direction.

I shot a .223 for many years to 1000yds. They are not the best wind beaters, but with practice you can master it quite well.

First, you need to shoot 80gr Sierra or Berger bullets. Any less won't do it justice. The 1-8" twist will work fine. A 30" barrel would be a better choice to gain all the velocity you can, but I've used a 26" with good success.

The best powder I used to get velocity up was VV N-540 and moly bullets.
It was the most fun to shoot at that distance. Have fun.

I have seen a few people at Connaught shooting 223 at 900M but the vast majority use 308 because it is a rare event when there is no wind.

During the warm-up matches at the DCRA there are matches just for .223.
Some people have had luck with 75gr A-max bullets as well as 80 gr Sierra's, Berger's or Nosler's.
I have a 1:9 twist Kreiger barrel on a Rem 788 action that will shoot 80's out to 900m.
The load I use is 26.0 gr of Varget in a Winchester case, 205 match primer with an 80 gr Nolser.

My Kiwi mate is doing this at the mo in Trentham, when he gets back next month I'll try and ask him, beware and be ready for death by slow explanation of technique and handloading. A really nice guy but I have him set up my new dies and I always try to rush him or he will start precision prepping my brass.

I have been shooting my Savage 12FVSS in .223 out to 800 yards with success. I am using 75 Gr A-Max, loaded .005 off the lands (2.510 OAL) and a charge of 24.1 GR BL-C2 - in a Winchester case (neck sized) and a CCI BR4 primer. This is using a 26" factory barrel, with a 1 in 9 twist (measured it, actually 1 in 8 3/4).

I have some loads I am still tuning with Varget, as well as I am working on loads with the 77 Gr Sierra HPBT - only tested them out to 300 yrds, they were fairly decent, going to do some more work on them this spring.

I do want to try them to 1000 this year, I suspect quite a stretch, especially with the wind - the 75 GR has a BC of .435, so it is getting about as efficient as you can get.

I suspect with a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7, you could shoot the 80 or even some of the 90 GR bullets.

I assume you are serving from your avatar. Is it easy to own your own target and hunting weapons whilst serving? Also how do you deal with handloading. I can imagine a room inspection seeing all my components and primed cases and the Sgt Major having a fit!

A very sucessful .223 long range shooter I know uses 80 gr Bergers and N550 powder. Sorry I don't know how much, but I suspect there isn't much room left in the case.

Previous served, that's an old photo - 5 years in the reserves. However, I can imagine the two RSM's from the regiment reacting to a room full of component etc. or the base CWO!

I wanted to shoot competitively when in Germany but you do need at least a rimfire target rifle to practise. The Army said apply for a german Civvy license, a big no no. All tests are technical and in German. Too difficult. I waited till I got back to the UK but even then for the 2 years I was based in lancashire we spent both summers overseas for 4 months followed by a 2 & 1/2 year tour to NI which has different laws again. I waited and settled when I left!
