I just tried to buy a consignment rifle from the Edmonton Wholesale Sports store.

I agreed to the asking the price, sight unseen, but when I went to pay them with my Visa card, they said that they would not ship the rifle to me till the funds came in from Visa!

WTF?

It could take 30 days for Visa to remit those funds to Wholesale. I'm supposed to wait 30 days for my goods?

Once the credit card authorization number goes through, that purchase is guaranteed by Visa.

I told them to forget it and would spend my dollars elsewhere.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Rant off!

There has been problems with phone in Visa orders. The business has no signature if the Visa holder says he did not authorize the purchase the business does not get there money from Visa.

Surprise me...

Had business with them twice in the past 6 month and both with card transaction.. both times, within 7-10 days the rifle was home..

Maybe the consignement thing that cause a problem???

I just bought a rifle over the phone from Wholesale in Winnipeg. They asked me to fax them a photocopy of my Visa and ID, Which I did. The rifle was shipped the same day.

I don't understand what happened.

My card is A-1 so that's not the problem.

The guy at Wholesale said that they had been stiffed for big bucks in the last couple of monthes over credit card purchases.

Perhaps Lorne's right in that a credit card purchase without a signature can be challenged by the cardholder.

I buy lots of plane tickets over the phone each year for business and they are $3000-7000 a pop and I've NEVER had a problem.

Too bad since I was going after a BRNO 602 .375 H&H I've been trying to buy for a while.

Is it VISA specific?

Anyway, yes, all purchases without aq sig can be challenged by the client.

However, there is physical evidence of the purchase in this case because the registation would be transferred.

I"d call abck and try again, and talk tot he supervisor if necessary.

I'm a Banker and what Wholesale is describing is very popular method of committing fraud. The client agrees to pay for an item, the company gets to card authorized and then ships the item. The fraudulent client waits a week or so then reports to visa the merchant defrauded him and he didn't get the item. Visa or Mastercard then charge back the money the company got and ask for the signed copy of the slip, of course the company doesn't have it.
In this case the situation was probably made worse by the fact it was a consignment sale. If you are really hot for the rifle ask Wholesale if you can do a direct deposit to their Bank.
To companies dealing with c/c's is a necesarry evil, and crooks very quickly learn to use the system to their benefit. I've had business customers of mine loose thousands of dollars to this. The airline thing is different, you can't dispute you took the flight, because they have to book you on the plane at the time, also you usually have to "join" the site. Lots of US companies refuse to ship to Canada for this reason, it's much harder to track the packages over the border.

I was told the same thing by Wholesale Sports about a month ago. Said they had been taken for more than $15,000 in credit card fraud, and would not take a payment over the telephone.

When I was there two weeks ago, they took the same card, but needed to see ID. My PAL was enough.

In the meantime, the 223 they had on hold for me was sold.

Go figure.

That makes a lot of sense.

I did confer with their supervisor so I'll arrange a direct deposit.

Why is it that good, law abiding citizens always end up paying for the goddamned criminals?

geologist, have you bought from Wholesale before? I'm just curious because the last time I ordered from Wholesale, they had my card no. on file, asked if I still wanted to use that card and done deal. Maybe that's not going to happen anymore

I'm pretty sure that I have bought supplies from them in the past but no firearms.

Nothing like a few thieves to screw things up for everyone.

On a lighter note congrads on the new rifle. Nice. Some pics would be good when you get it. :)

2 things...

2 things...

1. No sig on file

2. Consignment piece

Likely #2 is more the culprit. If something happened, they have to pay the person.

I suspect if you were buying new stock product...no problem.

I worked for them PT in YYC for a number of years.

Call me crazy (you'd be right) but if you are buying a rifle, conignment or otherwise, you would have to provide them with a PAL and your address. They would then verify it with the CFC as valid. Why would that not be enough proof of identity to show Visa that the transaction is clena and not fruadulent? I've bought ammo at Wholesale Edmonton and paid by mastercard. The cashier asked to see my PAL and photo I.D. and the manager told her she just needed my PAL.
I am not a fan of wholesale, their prices are good but they are always so busy it takes hours to get someone to help you.

I have bought rifles and sporting goods from Wholesale Sports and had them shipped without a problem, but once I had a friend who was in Edmonton i tried to buy some stuff and have him pick it up they wouldn't do it.Don't really blame them for that, can see their point.
