Hey guys,

I've been reading the Labrador hunting brochure and it looks like

A) There's a late-summer caribou hunting season in Labrador (well, the season starts late August)

and

B) It's open to non-locals.

Is any of this true? I assume you need a guide..... can you hire just anyone, or how does that work/ What's the bag limit?

The season does ordinarily start in August but was delayed this year as a result of a census that revealed a very severe decline (90 percent) in the population. Some zones reopened in November, others just a few days ago.

Unfortunately for non-residents, which would have been available via licensed outfitter, that hunt option has been suspended for the foreseeable future.

Ordinarily, I would point you to the NL Hunting & Trapping Guide 2010-11, but the Labrador caribou situation is a more recent development than what is in the Guide.

We had really good caribou hunting with two animals per license. It was almost too easy you could easily drive up to couple hundred, sometimes thousands. But the heard has been going down hill. They were up to half a million animals but last count was around 75 thousand last summer. So the hunt was cut to one animal no commercial licenses and Iam pretty sure no non residence. Not sure what Quebec is doing still might be able to go to an outfitter over there. Iam waiting on snow now to get mine. Our winter has been crap real hard to get in to them now without any snow to use snowmobile.

I see. I knew the situation was desparate on the island, didn't know if it was as bad on the mainland.

That stinks on a lot of levels.

I've looked into doing the QC hunt, and I'd rather go to Labrador, if it's open, because even though I need an outfitter/guide, the licence is a lot cheaper, there'll be a lot more english spoken, and I'm kinda wanting to head up there on a motorcycle trip anyway.

HAHAHAHA I hope you upgrade the suspension and put some knobby tires on the bike, cuz its dirt road all the way...lol...I think about 200km's is paved between Lab city and Goose Bay...Good luck!!!

As far as the hunting goes, only NFLD residents can get a Cariboo tag, and only 1 per hunter. My buddy owns an outfitter business in Goose Bay and he is really hurting...He had 26 people booked, but had to cancel the hunts due to no tags being issued. He only had 4 customers this year, all from the island. Just in Goose Bay, one butcher shop is already closed, the other is not far behind...outfitters are scrambling to find ways to make money, resorting to offering wildlife tours and transportation services just to put food on their table. The NFLD government really dropped the ball on this one...This decline in population has been going on for years, yet they did nothing to stop it...they kept issuing 2 tags, and the innu's shoot as many as they can fit in their truck. Game violations and more specifically poaching, go on constantly, and nothing gets done.

I'm fully aware of the narsty road. That's part of the reason to do it. I've got a 2001 DR650 with knobbies and all that fun stuff.

Lots of guys do it. Supposedly 500 bikes ran it last year. http://w ww.goldensextant.com/TransLab.html#anchor34241

My actual plan was to go up with a buddy in his truck with my bike in the back. We'd shoot our caribou, he'd head back south with the caribou, while I pushed on on the bike. But looks like that won't happen now!
