Has anyone used the BDC reticle? I'm interested in a new Nikon Monarch scope, but I wonder whether the BDC reticle is really for me. I don't shoot game animals past about 200 yards, generally, though a 300-yard shot is always a possibility, albeit a slim one. I've read a couple of gun-mag reviews where they said this reticle is more comfortable to use than the Burris, Leupold or Bushnell styles.
I've tried a Burris Ballistic Plex, and thought the reticle worked well; it didn't seem complex or "cluttery". Naturally, I sold the scope and wish I could have it back, but I've also got the itch to try a Nikon.
Who likes or dislikes range-compensating reticles vs. plain plex reticles, and how does the Nikon BDC stack up in your estimation?

The Nikon uses a vertical stack of small circles in place of the hash marks, the idea being that you can aim through the circles at various distances, or "fine-tune" to your trajectory by using the tops or bottoms of the circles as hash marks. Very similar iseas, just a slightly different application. I believe Sheppard (sp?) sopes use a similar reticle to the Nikon.

I got ProStuff with BDC, never shot over 100m, so cannot comment on usfulness. I like it thou, it's non-obstructive and can be useful.

I have one, because I wanted to try it.

It works ok, but if you're hunting mostly 200yds and less, you don't need it. Just sight in 1.5" high at 100 and you're good to go.

I found it a bit cluttered at the 200 yd ring, being so close to the cross-hairs. More importantly, you'll enjoy better contrast and clarity out of a VX III.

try zeroing using Max Point Blank range...alot of modern cartridges are around 300..so you just aim dead on and voila..good to go..depends on the size of the vital area but should work for you with any reticle, i'd go leupold.

Well, my question has become academic. I was looking for a scope for my new Hawkeye in .257 Roberts. Walked into a shop, saw a VXII 2 X 7 with Long Range reticle, bought it. Done. Hopefully the rifle will be in on Saturday. YeeeeeHaw!
