Always made use of shorter barrels, never really had the need for an SG barrel over 24".

Who's runnin' 30" barrels or longer ? What specifically do you use them for ?

I get the whole sight radius and swing-ability thing of course.

Trying to get my head around the need for a 32" or 34" barrel. Guess I can see it for certain sporting applications but it's gotta be unruly to carry around the bush.

Curious why they work for some.

Before screw in chokes we all used 30 plus inch barrels. Most guns came that way.we used them for waterfowl. And everything else including slugs for deer. Today not may factory guns cone with 30 plus inch barrels .sporting clays is another deal.the extra leghth helps swing reduces recoil by added weight.i have a 40 inch barreled marlin 12g pump that was a great goose gun.

I have tried them all and I certainly shoot longer barrels better. My sporting clay scores will suffer by 10% of so. What is worse is I am never sure why I missed. Most times with my longer barrels gun I know what I did wrong and have a chance to make adjustments. Not sure what it is, longer guns just feel better, swing smoother, and most times shoot where I am looking. just my .02 your mileage may vary

40 inch? Wow

Can you post a picture? I am picturing it looking ridiculous. I have never heard of anything past 36 inch

I have an older 870 I use for 3-gun that holds 14 rounds. The magazine is still longer than my 30" barrel but it seems to hit everything I aim at!! It needs to be placed in dump barrels carefully but it shoots easier than I expected :)

40" barrel dutchhunter ??? Wow, don't read that everyday !

Maybe your right about the current trend gunsaholic, which is why I'm inquiring I guess. Have several uses for barrels ranging from 12", 14", 18.5" 20", 21" and 24" but so far have not found a need for even a 26" and up.

Maybe if I got into clays and waterfowl I would fill the gap in the barrel length.

Very interesting points there Kenny. I can see how a longer barrel might give more "feedback" to diagnose a miss. Even comparing say a 21" to a 12 or 14" I sorta notice the same thing.

I have a 30" Winchester Model 12, Remington 1100 and a Beretta A303. All are for duck hunting. The longer barrel can be a nuisance in the blind and in the mud.

This is interesting to me madtrapper143. So what barrel length do you feel you could go down to and still be equally effective at your task ?

Keep me in mind if'fin yew git thuh
hanker'in to dislike this long legg'd gal.

I use 32" for trap, 30" for skeet and sporting clays, and 28" for all of my bird hunting.

stubble jumper,

I get the 28" for birds (assuming it's a little handier length in the field).... but what does the extra 2"'s do for you between your 32" trap & 30" clay lengths ? I find it interesting the 2" difference for the two different disciplines.

I don't have any pictures of her but if you look up marlin model 120.you can find pictures. It was given to me by a good friend.

30" browning for trap and upland/waterfowl/white tail. I practice trap and use the same gun for hunting. I know it defies convention, but the gun fits me soooooooooo well it is a dream to shoot. And yes that beautiful walnut doesn't look brand new...

I like 26 " as a start. I am not tall and I find I can keep a 26" barrel out of the mud easier than a 30" barrel. I have a BPS at 22" and it due to the long receiver handles very well is and a good duck/goose killer. I guess after answering the question overall length is more vital than barrel length. But with most pumps and semis to reduce the oal you need a shorter barrel. Side by sides and o/u's benefit from the receiver configuration.

Short barrels, long barrels and everything in between has been a come and go fad for years. I think the inclination right now is actually back to longer barrels.

You know far more about shotguns than I.
But given that nearly every off the shelf hunting shotgun now comes with 26 or 28 barrels as the factory options I wonder why you say that. Much rarer is the 30 inch, which is usually reserved for guns with sporting or trap designations.
