For the first time in 14 years I tried packing an only iron sighted rifle.
I did have my binos along, but that was it. Did I ever enjoy it. Lighter to carry, targets much easier to aquire in the thick cover and out to 200 yards the shooting is still comfortable. It brought back alot of memories of being a teenager with the old mauser, sitting on the cutline waiting for that unsuspecting whitetail. I think it will be coming out with me again soon!

Anyone else out there?:D

Yes, my Lyman Deerstalker, and my Winchester 94 have iron sights, and I like it that way. I have gone back to the basics this year, and after shooting some targets the other day, I think I am set to go.
 
Me too - After coming to the realization that my success rate with irons has been much higher than with scopes and red dots, it back to basics for these 49 year old eyes.
One thing I did notice, using a scope gave me a "false confidence", causing me to take longer shots. As an example, two years ago I missed a nice buck - broadside shot, resting off my knees. This was a relatively easy shot, and I know the gun was sighted in. After the fact, I paced off the shot at 130 y. Here in the tight bush of Central Ontario, that is a long shot - I'm sure the bullet was deflected by some brush...
So its back to the range with my peep sighted BSA P-14.

Hey...me too! :D At least, for the first part of the season...I'm going out with my .375 H&H chambered M70 equipped with only it's iron sights.

I had a scope on it, but decided it would be fun to try without optics...and it's great! It makes the rifle "handier"; that's sure! I too was surprised at how well I could do on targets at the range with open sights.

I use an old No.4 Mk1* sporter with irons. Works great for my 1 deer a year!:D

Last year I used a scoped Norinco M-14. It performed great, but I find that I prefer a bolt action when hunting big game.;)
 
The other iron sighted rifle I will likely end up toting afield this year is my super-handy Ruger "Deerstalker" .44 Magnum Carbine. :)
 
For deer, irons are definitely going out this year (especially in the early part of the season) - either the 38-55 (Win. model 94) or the No4 mk2. The latter is very decent out to 200 yards, handy to carry and provides fast target acquisition in the bush.
 
One of these years I will have to get out my Grandpa's Enfield No.III MkI
It slayed alot of moose in it's day from what my Aunt told me.
I hope to take out the 1899C savage in 37-303 once it is finished, hopefully for it's hundredth birthday next fall. :)

I am still debating whether or not to scope the 9,3. I will be taking it on an Elk hunt in a couple years that took 7+ years to get a special draw license for. But then again, it worked quite well for moose......

So many guns, so little time.......

I had one of those on my Deerstalker for awhile...wonderful target acquisition! The only reason I took it off is that this rifle is sooooo nice to carry with the open factory sights - it feels much like a 10/22. :)

It's actually been proven, that with everything equal, age, eyes and competence, that open iron sights are as accurate at 100 yds as scoped sights. bearhunter

Peep sites aren't cheating! They're simply the best iron sites system out there!
