Hey guys,
Please don't think I'm dumb or crazy, but why are AR or AR type platforms restricted even if the barrels are 18.5'' or more? I've seen alot or AR type carbines in the exchange threads and they seem to be restricted? Am I hallucinating or is there something about this type of platform that make them restricted?

thanks for the help.

Dan

the AR is restricted because it isn't prohibited.

The VZ58 isn't named restricted or prohibited because the people that named the AR restricted didn't know about it (the VZ) in 1995.

Also, this is in the wrong section. AR-15 questions should be posted in the "Black Rifles" section.

Ddsfgfd bfbhg hrtd xcx dfsd m,n b nntyfvi sdxvc. Understand? Me either.
Gun owners aren't smart enough to understand why some guns need to be restricted and why some don't.

The AK47 and AR15/M16 rifles were banned by design by the anti's in 1995. When the Canadian supplier of military C1's flipped out about their loss of civilian sales, and the people who competed against the military complained, the gun was set to restricted. The irony of this is that the AR15 is actually a better gun than the AK47, but the kalashnikov remains banned. The ultimate irony is the existence of the VZ58

Sorry about posting in the wrong section. New to rifles so dont know all the terms and regulations. Just thought it was odd.

I hate people...I want an AR but dont wanna pay 500$ a year to be part of a club or have to write how my #### smells just to shoot it.

$500 for a yearly range pass?!?!?! That makes my but hole pucker just at the thought...

I guess I'm lucky to have to pay a combined total of $138 for 2 different ranges.

My 11 year old son asked the same question the other day and I couldn't give him an answer. Just goes to show you that an 11 year old has more common sense than any politican. Oh, he also asked why we need to travel to an approved range to shoot our pistols. Again, I didn't know the answer to his question....

I agree about the AR platform but not being able to carry a concealable weapon around where ever you want, I can see the logic's behind that.

Just take a good look at bob rae and that other idiot termel and that pretty well sumes it up. These Two are the reason we have these idiotic laws in place. I just can't believe people actually vote these things into power to control their lives, wakeup you morons.

The answer about AR's depends on your view of history.

I believe c-68 was a reaction to the OKA and native uprisings not PolyTechnique. Thus why ARs, Ak,s etc were initially made to be prohibited.

Certainly Poly was the excuse used to gain support but almost all past gun laws in all western countries are based on either fear of uprising by the government, racism or as a diversion with public safety used as disguise

The other view puts the responsibility on solely on Poly technique. This has equal merit as the list of prohibs matches the list of proposed banned firearms in California at the same time period. Certainly we have seen trends of Canadian law following California laws.

No matter the version you find more realistic AR15's were slated to become prohibited and only a spat of concentrated lobbying on behalf of competitive shooters left AR15's as restricted.

An extremely detailed history of Canadian gun laws
