Why are some semi autos prohibited or restricted and others not?

Why is a semi auto AK-47 prohibited, yet other same caliber semi autos are not? I've seen rifles that look identical to an AK and perform the exact same way, yet they are considered non-restricted. Why are some firearms restricted or prohibited based on their look or "scaryness"? What fools came up with these laws? I'm very confused.

You may as well ask the liberals where their nuts went. Even they don't know. Try not to find reason with gutless lefties and their ideas. You won't find any.

Why is the AK-47 prohibited in Canada?

Simple....... in addition to being semi-automatic, it has a fully-automatic mode with a firing rate of 600rds/min. This is comparison with the CZ 858, a very similar firearm in appearance, etc, but with only a semi-automatic mode.

1st. Welcome to CGN

2nd. If you can ever get a rational answer from your MP or the RCMP about the classification of firearms... let us know.

I've been at this game for a number of year, and the closest I've ever come to an answer if "them" saying it is this way "because they said so"...

It's not quite that easy (or rational)

The Norinco Hunter is prohibited because it is a AK47 variant, even though it was only offered in semi-automatic form.

The Armscor AK22 (a 22lr look alike) was prohibited as a variant of the AK, even though it does not share any component with the AK and only came in semi-automatic form

*-*-*

To push the questioning one step further, fully automatic firearms were prohibited even though there is no empirical data to show they pose a danger to public safety in Canada.

*-*-*

Someone didn't like them, so they banned them.

It is because the philosophy of prohibitionists is to chip away gun rights a little at a time.

It makes no sense to ban weapons that look "scary" from a public safety standpoint. But the goal of gun control is not public safety.

It makes a lot of sense if you want to attack gun ownership as a concept - to slowly chip away at what people are allowed to own. It is easier to build up hysteria in the public to support bans on "scary" guns than normal guns, and to the banners one more banned gun is a good thing regardless of the reasons.

Our firearms law and regulations are not meant to make any sense. If they made any sense they would be clear to everyone and that would make them far too easy to interpret correctly. We can't have that situation develop in this country because it would put too many self appointed experts and lobbyists - especially those who are antis - out of work.

Everybody knows that the AK 47 has the ability to load itself with super duper space debris bullets that penetrate through earth's core at 14km/second and fire 10000000 rounds per second

Why? Because I said so.

Perhaps more to the point, why do think that letting people that hate guns create gun laws will result in "sensible" law?
Can you imagine if the Motor Vehicle Branch was staffed with people that couldnt drive?

hahaha ya makes perfect sense, sounds like they pulled gun names from a hat and prohibited them.

Not far off, actually. Someone did a FOI request a while back, asking how certain guns got listed. They got a package of photocopies of Gun Digest or similar, with many guns having a big X felt penned through them! So the story goes, anyway.
