A 22mag semi has always been on my purchase list, had my eyes on CZ and Volquartsen, I see CZ discontinued there’s and it’s been one of the most highly appreciated functional one of them all,
The Volquartsen is just so damn $$$$$
Not really interested in the tactical looking rifles, or a project that’s gonna need lots of tinkering,
Any recommendations?
Thanks

Hk 300, or vq. The magnum research is a botch job

The cost is a none issue over the life of the gun. Life’s too short shooting or owning shi¥¥y guns

22wmr ammo is pricey. Youlll spend more in ammo than what you pay for the gun.

Why? Supply and demand. .22 Mag was more popular before the 17 HMR. While popular, there are not many 17 HMR semis built, and some were prone to feeding issues. Not so much with the .22 Mag. .22 Mag has always been more of a hunting arm than a range toy; accurate enough for small game out to about 100 yards or so, but certainly not a target round, although some shot amazingly well. Mag-dumps are expensive as well.

These were very popular back in the days of the Jack-rabbit drives when I was a kid and many fox and ground hogs were shot with them also. As farming advanced, fence lines disappeared, and eventually, so did the Jacks. With the disappearance of the Jacks, the food supply for fox diminished and rabies further reduced their numbers, then coyotes moved in making fox even harder to find and further reducing the numbers of groundhog as well..

In my area the .22 mag was pretty much obsolete by the time I was as kid. The new, popular fox/Jack rifle was the .222 Remington, now it is the .223. 17 HMR is still a bit of a novelty as far as hunting goes.

Amazing to think how much things have changed in the last 60 years.

Why? Supply and demand. ...
Agreed. I like the cartridge plenty, but it's no surprise that there's not much market support. 22Mag is just not as relevant as it used to be. Especially since ammunition prices are so close to centerfire options.

There is not a big enough market for a .22 Mag.... or the manufacturers would be competing more for the small market it is. It's the cost.

Where did you purchase? I probably shouldn’t even ask, but I may have to break down and go this route

Sylvestre Sports in Bonnyville, AB. When I was searching it seemed like only they and Calgary Shooting Center carried complete rifles. CSC had none in stock and a 3-4 month wait so I drove up to Bonnyville.

Rimfire has never really been my thing but the accuracy and reliability are enough that it's now one of my favorites. I have an older Trijicon 3-9 on it and weight is just over 6lbs. Reliable 15 round mags are easy to find. I love it so far.

I imported the first 2 VQs with “snake skin fluted” barrels into Canada (from the Buffalo Gun Center) many years ago. RCMP was reluctant to give their blessings because they thought these reptilian skins were on a banned list along with ivory and alligator skins etc…lol
Our group has used VQs in 17HMR, 22LR, 22WMR and .204 for running jacks and coyotes for many years. The .17HMR occasionally gave me blown rims with the magazines being ejected in 10 pieces or more. Not the gun’s fault, some of the early ammo had hairline cracks in the neck and with the ingress of moisture into the powder resulted in hang fires. The rifles survived, that’s how well built and strong they are. The .22WMR and all the other calibres ran flawlessly, like the proverbial poop through the goose. Worth every penny. And Sylvester’s in Alberta is a good place to start. They will even help you put together a custom order if you want something different than their standard offerings off the shelf. Just ordered ‘ONE’ more…Summit, SS frame and barrel, classic stock in 17HM2…now the wait begins, I’m very excit…Ahlalalala !!!!

^this. Probably costs about $0.05 more to make 22WMR than 22LR, but the ammo cost is about 3-4X+ as much. Delivers more/warrants a higher cost, but come on.. I think if you didn't have any interest in centerfire calibers but had bigger varmints to deal with out to 100-125 yards, it really shines in a job like that. Otherwise, for things like target shooting-22LR eclipses the accuracy possibilties by 100 miles, and factory 17HMR will clean it's clock at every turn basically.

Still love it. :)

Love the 22WMR. Would probably see more semi's out there if the ammo cost was reasonable as most of you pointed out. Agree completely with 22LRGUY that the cost for WMR is way out of line with what is should be. I am sure the ammo manufacturers are loving the margin they are getting these days for this caliber.

I have a savage 22 mag and it’s one of the most accurate 22 mags I’ve had and I’ve had a lot . It functions flawlessly.

Also the Magnum Research works fine once you put VQ or KIDD ejector in it.
