Hello people, I have a question and I think there will be many different opinions to this. I have noticed on the exchange forums lately that there are a few high quality optics being offered for in some cases the same or more than the price that can be had to purchase a new one if you leave taxes out of the picture. This is just my opinion but if I was honestly trying to sell something used and possibly with small flaws that I would be advertising less than new price so it would be more attractive than buying new. I know that a lot of pictures and such are given and sometimes even the flaws are pointed out but does anyone else find it strange that the prices asked are still like new pricing? I have always sold things for less than new simply because its used. I was once told by someone that used stuff should be at minimum 15 to 20% less than new pricing even if the item looks NIB. Just wondering what everyone else thinks. Maybe I'm out to lunch on this. Of course I'm talking about items that are currently available new and are not collector type items that accrue value with age.

Sometimes people bought stuff when the US dollar was alot higher and dont take into account that new stock prices have shifted to reflect a weaker dollar now. Other times they are just trying to gouge, if its to high nobody will buy it.

see the problem can lie in the fact that say I bought a scope when it first came out and paid $2000 for it. I never used the scope though so it's near new so I decide to list it for $1500. Now though the scope can be purchased brand new for $900. The seller doesn't want to take that large of a hit. Their loss.

You'll find people selling items for the new price even though they are used because you can't find them for sale anywhere (every company is sold out). This seems to happen a lot with Norinco Handsguns :p

OR

That person bought the scope from a local retailer and thus paid more for it than you can find them for sale with an internet based company. Can also tie in with the first example.

Min 15-20%?? That is close (well, 13%) to the new price with no tax!!!! I say 30-40% is what the range should be if the item is used. The only exception should be if the item is sold out everywhere or in high demand. I think that would warrant a higher than normal used price.

Don't let it get to you...I've noticed most things in the exchange tend to be close to new in price. There's no way I'm buying used when the price is that close (hence my low trader rating). Just take it for what it is...and enjoy your NEW purchase as I do.

Plus it's usually just asking price, to leave some wiggle room for the seller. While some sellers have no clue as to value, and some are just looking for a sucker, most of the reason for high prices is because of buyers. Many people will risk an online transaction with a stranger for minimal savings, and I don't really know why.

I have no problem with used goods, because I know that I'm going to put some dents and scratches in things, but I want some worthwhile savings. And that seems to rarely happen in the EE.

HA I thought it was just me. I have been combing the EE looking for a deal on anything! A couple of times I found an item I would have pursued, but then had second thoughts because the price seemed too low!? I'm not wasting my time. Just hit the big name Canadian internet stores and pay retail. Very disappointing.
