If you’re pining for some kind of rifle, but just can’t scrape the bucks together, you may need to look no further than your local gun shop for the SKS Carbine. This abundant military surplus rifle was originally manufactured in Russia, later to be copied in manufacture by several countries including China who produced the rifles on machinery supplied by Russia. But it’s not my intent here to give a history lesson. I’m reporting as a shooter who has a load of fun with a rifle that is inexpensive to buy and shoot. And the SKS carbine is not just for plinking. It can make a significant ranch gun or decent deer or varmint rifle to boot.
Ammo is cheap around $200 for a case of surplus. So practice shooting won't hurt your pocket. Scopes and mounts are better bought from Russian producers as they have been making them for over 50 years.

So why did you buy your SKS rifle?

Post pictures plz

Interesting fact Russian SKS will fire at -70 C . Coldest temperature recorded on Earth ---
-68 Siberia , Russia
It is the only rifle that local people have been using in Siberia as it wont jam at very cold temperature. It is one of the top picks for Native population up North for that reason.

I love russian guns, i love the look of the SKS, its a extremly durable and reliable gun with good accuracy. If you look at the pic, from top to bottom:
russian Tula 1955/56, well used, many mismatched parts so its not a real "refurb" since still have the original blueing. However, i have refinished the stock because was in really bad shape. This sks is more accurate than my chinese type 56.

Second on the pic: russian Tula 1953 unissued still in the grease. I will not fire this one.
Appear to be mint, not a single trace of wear, even on the hammer. I guess the russian armorer may have fired very very fews rnds to zero the sights before putting in storage but no wear.

Last one is a chinese late production, barrel is pinned to the receiver instead of threaded, chromed barrel and chamber. Originaly came with a red fiber glass stock but i put a used wood stock on it and refinished with oil. Less well finished than the russians and not as accurate than my used russian but very good rifle. Now i have a cz858 for main rifle because,in my opinion, the ergonomic is better and accuracy is better too. I have shot many surplus and some commercial ammos, never had any failure, summer or winter. I still use my russian sks from time to time and i will have fews more russian next year because i still love them. My sks are on the "never sell" list:)

It doesn't get that cold around here, but it's nice to know that I have a functional rifle for those sort of temperatures.

Why I like the SKS:

a. It uses inexpensive and effective ammunition. In this aspect, it's a step above .22 LR for plinking and target shooting. At the rising price of other calibers, the 7.62x39 is still relatively inexpensive.

b. It's an inexpensive military surplus rifle. Functional and reliable as the Combloc nations required of their small arms, therefore it's good for the peasants and rednecks like me.

c. There is the option of many aftermarket accessories for easy customization (although I keep mine in its original configuration because I have come to prefer that).

d. Like a basic pump shotgun, it doesn't require spare magazines (except for the "D"), and it's also easy to carry clipped rounds without the possibility of a damaged or lost magazine. Stuff those rounds into your chest rig and you are good to go whenever.

e. If it gets dinged or scraped up, it adds to the character of the rifle. Exterior grime and nicotine stains go hand in hand with SKS. :D

A lot of guys snub their noses at the SKS, because it's not an AR or a nice accurate bolt action, but there is definitely a place in the collection for one as far as I am concerned.

I bought sks/sks-d rifles because they have lots of interesting accessories. I have two gen 1 night vision scopes for two of them. Ammo is cheap and the chinese are chromed to take it.

It's great fun, cheap practice, extremely reliable, ugly as sin so you don't give a damn if it gets scratched :)D) and its cheap to accessorize (I have a Tapco stock on mine cause I prefer pistol grips).

Because I'm not allowed to own an AK.
Cheap rifle, cheap ammo, non-restricted, simple, works everytime.
Same reasons I like the ruger 10/22

I bought mine for a bush gun, deer hunting in 94. Still waiting to go deer hunting. I also bought it because it was cheap and ammo was, is cheap. Makes it a great rifle for plinking, and a lot of fun too!

a major reason for it's popularity is the cheap and plentyful supply of ammo...

without the surplus ammo, the fun factor would be gone and who would reload for this marginally accurate rifle ?
