Why does everyone give the axis a hard time?

Curious as to why everyone gives the savage axis a hard time? I have one in .308 and for being a 400$ rifle I love the little thing. It is cheap feeling in the hands with that cheap plastic stock but performance wise it shoots better then most other more expensive rifles out of the box. After a few little diy jobs on them they can be a great little rifle.

^ I'm no snob but I wouldn't paddle a canoe with a savage axis

The axis does not shoot better than any other modern rifle; no offence but I get the feeling you haven't shot the competition if you feel this way.

Aesthetically and "fit" wise it is an abomination.

I'm not anti budget rifle; I am a well known supporter of the T3 against its legions of haters.

Accuracy though important is not the only thing that makes a firearm worth owning. There is a reason it is known as the "axle".

Because its a piece of junk !!! Seen a couple of them quite literally fall apart on hunts. On one in particular, the action screws backed out and the stock came off while me and my buddy were hunting coyotes. End of hunting right there. I bought a Ruger American .243 and it put the axis to shame.

I have one, a 223 I use for coyote's.

It does the job.

Yes, the trigger sucks compared to the two stage triggers on my Vanguards. But clipped a coil and a half from the spring and it's usable.

Yes, the bolt is sloppy compared just about all my other bolt guns.

Being just a 223 I can't speak to how the stock might react when fired if it was a 30.06 or 300 WM, but no issues with twisting etc on mine.

I filled the hollow butt end with spray foam and now it doesn't sound like an empty pop can rolling down the road in the wind whenever you bump/bang or rub it on something.

When it's in the safe it's along side another Savage, a few Weatherby's, Remington's, a Winchester, a Henry, a couple Browning's and a pair of H&R's - none of them "call it names or make fun of it".

It shoots well - certainly better than I do - I'm a hunter not a target shooter that measures accuracy in thousand's of an inch.

I'm not sure what people expect. You can find these things in the 300 to 400 dollar range - you can't expect a "Cadillac" at that price. I can buy 3 boxes of factory shells for my 257 Wby or I can buy a "whole rifle".

Not everyone has the disposable income to drop a grand on a rifle or even 700 bucks.

It's easy to say "I would never own one" if you can afford better.

What if you only had a budget of 350 bucks and owned no other guns. Would you say "I will do without until the kids move away or the wife finds a job because I would rather go without any gun at all than own an Axis".

And really, most are only comparing the Axis against other "mediocre" rifles anyhow.

If you put a Rem 700 BDL against a rifle that came out of the Browning or Weatherby custom shop, it looks and operates worse than the Axis in comparison.

It really is all perspective.

Junk izz junk and that's awll there izz too-it.
Right up there with them yung puppie 10-22's.

Gaaaaaaaaad, I'm start'in tuh sownd like an ole cuss.

The Remington 788 was the budget rifle of it's day. I won a few turkey shoots with one in 22-250, try and buy one now at a bargain price.
Judge each on it own merits and if economical fix what is wrong or live with it. Most annoyances disappear with familiarity.
I like doing more with less.

The Axis is pretty much the perfect example of how cheap a bolt gun can be made. At sub $300 they are worth a look if you are tight on money. If you paid $400 you didn't shop around and there are better budget guns at the $400 limit (Ruger American, Rem 783). You are also better off with just the base guns and not the packages, as the "extras" are pretty much garbage. The Axis II with accutrigger is not worth the retail price, again you get better triggers in the American and 783 which are better all around guns then the Axis and cheaper then the Axis II if you shop around.
So what's wrong with the Axis? Well a couple of design flaws for one. The mags are garbage, the plastic tab on the mag is prone to breaking off, and while the gun is cheap the mags are $40+.
The stock is weak and the forearm flexes and will contact the barrel with very little pressure. I'm not a great offhand shot as it is, but then throwing in that I have to remember to "artillery hold" the Axis when trying to take moving game is not something I need.
The bolt design makes for some pretty stiff cocking effort so you are not getting off a second shot very quickly if it's needed.
Sure they are accurate for $300 guns, but I personally don't think they are the best of the budget guns and have some potential reliability issues and design issues that could ruin a hunt. We are talking literally $100 more to eliminate reliability and desing issues by looking at the American or 783 which can be found starting at around $400. I won't even get into the Vanguard's that were on for $399 last fall, and can still be had for around $500....they put ALL the budget rifles to shame lol
I do own an Axis in 7mm-08.....for now anyway.

Shot plenty of guns, sure it's not as smooth as most or as pretty but every time I pull the trigger it goes bang and hits what I want.

Why so much hate ?

Because gun snobs !

Thats it !

You know the same crew that wont shoot Norinco 5.56 surplus ammo thru their very expensive AR15 or insist on shooting non coerosive premium 7.62x39 thru their supergrade SKS ?

IMO,
Life is too short to shoot with a rifle that feels "cheap in the hands". My shooting time is minimal enough as it is, part of the "experience" of shooting/hunting (for me) is enjoying and being proud of the quality of the tools I'm using.

Aesthetically it's horrid, I'm sure it's accurate but as already stated accuracy isn't everything.
I'm personally not a fan of any rifle that uses a separate wafer "recoil lug". Be it Savage, Winchester, Tikka, or Sako. It just seems silly to me.

Oh come on ..... I'd at least paddle a canoe with it .. :p

"Galamb" My perspective is that your perspective is bang on! I do not own the axis but my hunting partner with axis and years of exspireance wows the camp reliable while me with little exspireance and a white gold madalon well...not so much. The rifle is capable tool.

In this case the Hunter is reliable. Just because an experienced Hunter uses an axis, does not make it any better than the POS it is.

So, if you saw the best machinist in Detroit using a made in China plastic set of calipers, would you run to the store to buy the same ones because now they are a good tool? Lol

for the SAME $$ as an axis, you can buy a rifle 20x better quality. Just look at tradex, or a used, well, anything.
