Why does it cost so much to compete on a military range in Ontario?

Ok I expect to to get flamed here and all i am asking about it Ontario as i have not shot anywhere else.

now before we get to the meat and the fur starts flying I want it to be known that organizations such as DCRA (not to single them out as i don`t know the match fees for the )etc have a pretty good heritage

and the most important thing to me preserving that heritage and the best way is attracting new shooters.

I have been playing this game for about 4 years on the queens shilling but I have heard match fees are like 100+ plus ...........WTF:eek:

thats crazy

most comps are on DND property, they are run by competitors (not like palma) and the only cost i can see is for travel time hotels , maybe targets, etc for a few of the administering body maybe but some of them compete so its not like thier working.

Me i am lucky enough to be on a military funded team but if i was a private looking to start with out a team and bills to pay i would be SOL or if i had a rifle to and wanted to give it a try.

just my thoughts is all .

I am told up to 100 plus for non org members........funny now i can`t find it ....yeesh .........anyway if i am wrong i Know someone will level me out .......but how long ago was before
 
The money that has been spent at Connaught in last few years is unbelievable, berms over 3 million, sodding 1000 of yards of firing points and trucks watering for weeks, new outdoor washrooms. and range sits on 2600acres on the Ottawa river in the City limits of Ottawa.
Guess thats why its not cheap to shoot there.

The DCRA and ORA do not pay for use of DND ranges. I am not sure of the cost for entry fees for Service conditions matches however, 2 day TR/F Class events run about $75. Some run as high as $100 for some 2 day matches but you have to remember we have paid markers for these events.

Paid markers as in a paid butt party. No target pulling, no Butts officer duty, no walking back in forth to the butts on relay changes. Some TR /F Class shooters are getting up there in age, some in their 70's.
Butt markers are paid around $60 a day, Butts O $75 cash at the end of the day. If anyone knows of a teenager or someone looking to make some extra cash, that live on or near Base Borden, let the ORA secretary know.

Nothing's cheap these days. You have to be a member of the organizing/hosting group to shoot the matches. In Ontario, that would be the ORA, or the NCRRA which are of course affiliated with the DCRA. This will cost you about $200.00.

Then, there are the entrance fees to the match, which for the ORA are $50.00 for the service rifle matches. The ORA will generally not allow non-member to shoot there matches. So,, add the two together.

OSA is also out there, and they have a higher initial membership than the ORA, but after that I think it is lower. They also charge the same rate as the ORA for members ($50.00), but they allow non-members to compete at a higher rate ($100.00 is the asking price I believe).

So,, you wanna play?,, then you are gonna have to pay.

NSCC is another thing all together,, and can be pricey.
 
I'm part of a group that would "rent" time at Winona... I wasn't the organizer, but if I recall it cost thousands of dollars to secure 4-5 dates throughout the summer months... Each member of the group pony'd up their share and we had a great time shooting...
'Always galled me that the range sits there unused most of the time and to use it we have to pay through the nose... I mean it's gov't property... Hence aren't we "the people" the owners...?
Hasn't happened the last couple of years as the range was supposedly going to be renovated and of course when the original organizer decided to move on noone picked up the reigns to continue the endevor...

my concern is that all this might turn off potentials to the sport

then we all pay

and what is it with this thing with OSA and ORA I am hearing all sorts of rumors of people being blacklisted ...due to inter org issues .....I don't have a names but I hope to god its wrong

Agreed, and your agrument has been heard before, and continues to be heard now. I believe there is no price gouging going on, and that it is all reasonable (well, for the most part).

The reverse is also true, if the price charged is to low to sustain the organizing group and then they stop hosting the matches.

Also, membership has it's privileges. Members through the executives control and oversee what is being charged and what the collected fees are being spent on.
 
Problem is, is that every freeken association has membership fees.
In Quebec, I want to shoot IPSC then pay FTQ fees and IPSC match fees.
I want to practice with my restricted then pay club fees at every club I want to shoot at.
Now I go to Ontario to shoot service rifle, I then have to pay OSA for service rifle and pay ORA for their matches + match fees. Sorry but I have no interest in paying membership fees for an organisation that has it's home base 7hrs from my house, when I will only participate in matches held closer. So for me to shoot 4 service rifle matches with OSA this summer it will cost me $400 to shoot on public land, for which OSA or ORA have no expenses. If I am shooting on private land in which the organizers have maintenance fees and such I can understand. As someone else posted, these cost may just turn me off of shooting with these orgs.

When I first started shooting in Connaugh it cost me ~50$ match fees, rations and quarters for 2 days, now it's $120 for the same thing.

I think not, so all is done on DND ranges. DND will only recognize bonifide organizations to book their facilities, and there is always a cost associated with it, just like it costs money to eat and sleep at DND facilities.

Lets all get real here. Costs will not get lower, they will continue to get higher (just like gas and milk, and ammo, etc).

If you want to be active in competition, it will cost you. The cumulative hit can be heavy, and that is where we all have to make decisions.

Compared to the other provinces,, is the Ontario costs greatly different?

I don't know about matches but Wainwright is significantly cheaper to shoot at.

And What does it cost for ORA OSA DCRA ALL The others to have a range for a day or 2?

I haven't heard that yet

I think I already mentioned the cost for ORA and OSA. The full up numbers are on their web sites.

Edited to add: I just had a look at the ARPA web site, looks like they don't shoot at Wainright. Any ARPA members or guys from Alberta that can comment on this?
