Just noticed that my new Sako Grizzly does not have the 2 cross bolts in the stock that are present in every single picture of the rifle I can find online. I'm not sure why. Anyone know the reason for this variation? Mine is chambered in .308. Do they only put these in the medium action length version perhaps?
When the mag well is larger (eg longer) and recoil is a little more .. they stick a crossbolt to prevent splitting. As you go up in calibre they might add a second crossbolt behind the mag well. I think they also have a look at the grain ... in some cases if they are concerned they will stick a crossbolt in.
I have an older .375 H&H with two crossbolts and a .338W (Finnsport) with one crossbolt that is obvious ahead of the well and a second crossbolt where they have taken two plugs of wood out behind the mag well .. put a crossbolt in then replaced the wood plugs and chequered them with the rest of the stock .. if you look carefully you can see where this has been done...all to say - if there is no crossbolt - you dont need one!
(edit to add .. I have a All full stock in .243 with no crossbolt ...BUT have an old Sako Brochure that shows All laminates and plain stocks WITH and WITHOUT crossbolts !! go figure!)

Reminds me of Brigham Pipes .. used to be (may still be) that the more "Dots" (little brass pins) that were inserted in the stem of the pipe - the higher the quality....is SAKO telling us something?!?!
I checked with Stoeger. XS and S action sizes don't have crossbolts; the 3 larger action sizes do. Chasseur,
I'm not sure why your bav carbine has only a single crossbolt. Is it an 85 or an older model?
