Why don't they make Revolvers that fire 9mm or .40

According to S&W, the reason for the limit pin is to prevent setback of the cartridge case against the recoil shield during firing and binding the cylinder to prevent rotation. The limit pin strikes with sufficient force to mark the case head as can be seen in the photo below.

The only real advantage I'm after is Ammunition standardization. Chasing around and reloading different calibers is slightly annoying. Really I don't plan on using them in a self defense situation, but if it came to that I'm sure the 9mm has a good history.

Well, if you did, you'd have bought yourself a first-class ticket to the big house.

I can see your point regarding reloading, but you wouldn't need to chase down 38/357 or 44. These are readily available. You can load either for cents on the dollar (so to speak).

You still have to consider moon clips. These are more difficult to find than revolver caliber components. They're readily available in .45acp, as many revolvers are still chambered in that round. However 9mm etc are less popular in revolvers and are therefore less easy (and therefore more expensive) to locate.

It's a 6 of one, half dozen of the other sort of issue.
