I started to compete with my first rifle, a .22 cal rimfire. My older brother, cousin and myself would always challenge each other into shooting at farther and farther distances. This continues today, only my brother does it now with a bow while I do it with a Wildcat Magnum Cartridge.
When I joined the military, I was the top shot in basic. At a military skills demo, I watched very intently, as a sniper made three consecutive chest shots on a figure 11 target from 1000 yards
, I wanted that skill and went after it. Throughout my 26 1/2 years in the Military, I competed on various rifle teams. Now that I'm retired, I compete for the simple reason that I love to hunt at long and extreme ranges, competing, keeps me close to other shooters who like to shoot at distances most people couldn't think possible. It keeps my skills up and helps me in the fall hunting season with the long ones, and there have been many long ones and it keeps me from just wounding animals at long range, I pride myself on my ability to kill my game with the first shot.
It also keeps me around people that understand that guns don't kill people, people kill people.
