Why Is Finding a Shotty Such A PITA?

Been looking for a shotgun for my son (11) to get him into busting some clays. Would love to introduce him to skeet, but good luck finding appropriate guns. There's maybe a couple of good options, but no ability to try anything (i.e. have to order sight unseen online and hope it fits and works).

I just don't get why finding stock has to be so hard. I've clicked through every dealer on CGN and there's some options, but how do you choose when you can't try anything else. I'd love to find a youth O/U or semi, just so hard to source.

The laws are the laws and I'm not trying to start a debate (I think it's already been done once or twice), but when it's time to legally buy something why do dealers have such a tough time with stock and ordering?

I know many items in the CZ lineup are becoming scarce and due to shipping container shortages Chinese and probably European stuff is facing delays. They want the shipping containers so bad in China that they aren’t spending the day or two it takes to load them with lumber, grain etc from Canada and the states to send back to China because they also lose few days at that end unloading. Crazy world these days good luck with your search as it makes shooting more enjoyable when you have the appropriate firearm.
 
Years ago I was looking for a shotgun for a small statured person like me. Some of the what the LGS let me hold onto was like the size of a bazooka. Ultimately one helpful person there said while this may not sound the best, why don't I try a Remington 870 Express 20 ga YOUTH model. I said, "um, I'm not a kid". He said he expected that reaction and said it is targeted to smaller folks. I reluctantly tried it, and LOVED it. I still have it to this day. I know you said O/U or semi-auto, but maybe something to consider. The 870 has been around for a while, and is not overly expensive, so the risk is for what you pay is more manageable. 20ga has more availability options, gun selection wise and ammo wise, than 410. I also believe the Benelli Nova comes in a smaller version (called Compact maybe?).

Unfortunately, in the current climate a lot of guns are bought sight unseen, and it's not like Costco where we can just return it.

I feel your pain. The problem is with looking at reviews, what may fit one person may not fit another even though it is in the same genre.
 
The very small girl that was coming out skeet shooting last summer tried everything we had and eventually ended up buying a mossberg bantam 20ga and it fit her well and she shoots it very well

A friends daughter is using the Mossberg Bantam as well, it has been trouble free,and she enjoys shooting it.
 
There was a stevens 555 in .410 a few days back in the EE for a fair price (650 I believe). Maybe you could contact Stevens and get a youth buttstock from them? Otherwise, there's a 20ga version or two on a gun site where you post your ads for the canadian market wink wink, but they are asking a high price.

I can understand your frustration. I'm trying to find a shotty for myself and have basically the same problem. Now I understand why people are selling unfired firearms all the time on the EE.

I would never start a new shooter wit a 410, many don't hit anything, get frustrated, and lose interest. A 20 gauge semi auto is a far better choice.
 
Have you considered a pump? My wife and her friend both just got their PALs and being only 5' tall my wife is looking at youth models. The 20g winchester SPX field is what she is leaning towards. Seems to be a decent option as a first trap gun.

The gas operated semi autos produce less recoil, and 20 gauge shotguns tend to be lighter than 12 gauges
