Why no hotlinks?

Not a newbie but this seems to be the most appropriate place to ask this question. Why are we not supposed to post hotlinks? I'm not protesting it, it makes no difference to me. I'm just curious. Is it a bandwidth issue or something?

I think you can hotlink to sponsor sights. Basically it comes down to who's paid for advertising. Maybe I'm wrong

Read the rules. It's explained. It doesn't say you can't hotlink at all, nor does it say you can only hotlink to sponsors.

Under rules and guidelines:
No "hotlinking" email/website info or posting of phone numbers and/or contact information for businesses who do not support the operation of CGN.

Other than the above, and a thing about hotlinks in siglines, I couldn't find anything else regarding them. I also didn't look for too long, so let me know if there's parts I've missed

This site is funded by the sponsors that do pay to advertise.
It would not be fair to them to give free advertising to non-supporting vendors.

For sites that do not flog stuff, links are fine.
This includes Youtube vids, Wiki articles, any news articles (actually, for copyright reasons, published articles definitely SHOULD include a link), pictures of your G/F, etc.
