Why are we not allowed to hunt with airguns with a fps rated higher than 500?

DAMN IT. I just found out that we could? (with a rifle) can anyone second this?

I think that you might be confusing hunting with having to register. 500fps is the point at which an air rifle is considered a "firearm" and must be registered.

If anything, I would think that they would want OVER 500fps from a rifle for hunting.

You would THINK that but its incorrect. Atleast the ontario hunting regulations specifically state you may hunt with an airgun as long as it does NOT exceed 500fps. I called to argue this before i got my pal and wanted to hunt with a 500fps but they didnt even give me a reason why.

I think they were busting your balls. I never saw that.

You can hunt with any air rifle with the proper licensing and permits

You can also use an air pistol as long as it shoots below 500fps

Read them again. They specifically state that airguns may be used. AIR PISTOLS
must be under 500fps.

"...found out that we could...second this..." Read the definition of a firearm in the hunting regs.
Ontario hunting regulations specifically state air and pellet pistols may be used if the MV is under 500 fps. Over that means it's a restricted firearm.
"Air and pellet pistols with a muzzle velocity less than 152 metres (500 feet) per second may be used for hunting in Ontario (see restrictions on page 22)."

In Quebec they have recently allowed air guns for hunting certain small game. It must, however, be 500fps+, and thus be registered. So it doesn't save on any paperwork...
