Why no love for Ruger?

Ruger

I have more rifles from other makers but I've got a couple of Ruger centerfire bolt actions, too. Still hoping to add a Ruger #1 at some point, too.

Ah, so many rifles..... so little time.....

I'm seriously considering one for my next purchase. I'm not wild about the safety, but everything else is pretty nice. You can get a hawkeye syn/ss for $670, and it comes with rings. Even a savage is $590, and then you shell out for rings and bases. I wonder how accurate they are out of the box?

Rugers have a good look to them but they have never been noted for accuracy or tight tolerances. I remember one of the first Number 1's to come into Canada in 6mm Remington... beautiful wood, nice bluing... the chamber was so large and the throat so long you had to use a neck sizing die and it still full length sized the case and you could not seat a bullet out far enough to touch the lands...never did shoot very well. The same owner had a 77 in .308. The firing pin hole was so far off center it misfired often. Ruger replaced the bolt and then it worked better but it was never that accurate either. He presently owns a 77 in 30-06 which shoots fine. I worked on all of those rifles trying to get the best out of them. His Sakos shot way better.

The older Rugers were noted for so-so accuracy due to the sloppy quality control some of the barrels produced by their suppliers. Once Ruger took control of the barrel manufacturing the accuracy improved to the point they are as accurate as anyone else's production rifles marketed at a similar price point.

Why no love? Mostly because the bolt guns they....well, they.....ummm what's the word? Oh yeah, they suck! Just kiddin'. Don't like them - haven't handled one yet that felt like it fit and even if it was tolerably close enough the trigger was crap. Rather shoot my Stevens 200 - at least it knows it's a POS, but it feels great and shoots straight.

Was thinking of trying one, but after seeing the new Model 70's, I think the fit and finish is a nicer for a few dollars more in a CRF rifle.

I have an older M-77 tang safety that I bought used for 225.Floated the barrel and tuned the trigger to about 2 1/2#.It will shoot any mix of 165s into a sub1" at 100 yards.I have never had any problems in over 20 years with this rifle.Would love to find another in .270.As good as any gun out there IMHO!

My 375 RUger does MOA easy, too.:D

Yup guntech, x2.

I've had good and bad Rugers, mostly bad. Repairable mind you, but expensive. I also don't like Ruger triggers.

Now it's been a long time since I put any cash out on a "new" Ruger and I hear they've retooled their factory with CNC equipment, greatly tightening their tolerances. Savage did the same with supposedly stellar results.

When Bill Ruger was still alive, Ruger handguns were considered "the best for the money" on the market. Ruger rifles were always considered OK and the Mini 14 and 30 the best of the bunch. It takes a lot to get a semi auto Ruger rimfire to shoot well, but there are exceptions. The only Ruger I regret selling was a canoe paddle stocked, 7.62x39 stainless. I would like to find another.

As for Savages, they seem to have taken over the "best for the money" category at this time.

Personally, I still prefer the Tikka T3, but thats just my own humble opinion.

I don't like the way Ruger assembles their bolts either by the way, it makes changeing spring tensions a pain in the butt.
