I have a friend in the US who's somewhat of an aficionado of these little things, as they're a bit easier to find there. Interesting, considering our American brothers have much more strict import laws concerning most Chinese firearms than we do.
From what he says, the build quality was quite good and they're as rugged as any other M44. With that said, they were used very hard, and not always stored in the greatest conditions. Extremely rough wood, scratched and pitted metal, no bluing left to speak of, and so on are quite common. With that said, the barrels on the ones he's found have been very good, and they're still safe to shoot and even do so fairly accurately. Frankly, I'd buy one if I could find one. The T53 has always been my favorite M44 copy after the Polish M44.
