I'm just wondering why we dont see many poeple having nice custom 7mm rem mag as a precision rifle. I see a lot off 338 and 300 mags, 308 and centerfire .22's why not more 7mm? I've always seen that caliber as fast flat shooting long range round. is there something i'm missing? bullet availability for handloaders maybe?

Recoil.

I'm planning on building a rifle next year around the heavy weight 7mm bullets. It will not be using the Remington Magnum case.

If you look at F class worldwide, you will see more and more 7's being built and used. The last 3 to 4 yrs has shown how well the new Berger heavies can work at distance out to 1000yds and beyond.

Very few will choose the 7RM for this game as it is too much of a good thing. Wear and heat are just too much and you don't need this much case to go at the speeds these VLD's like to travel.

But it does slice through the wind superbly.

Most will stop with a 7RSAUM case volume. There are several cases that will do the same thing.

Another popular one is the 284 and improved version. A bit small for this bullet weight but has been popular. This would have the best barrel life of the rest but you will give up some ballistic advantage which is why you are using a hard kicker in the first place.

As to tactical type rifles, most trends follow US fashion and they have not really taken to the metric cals till lately. The 6mm, 6.5 and 7mm work superbly but the US has doggedly stuck to the 30cal

That is quickly changing as the superior ballistics are simply overwhelming the competition.

And winning drives fashion.

I have built several 7RM and love this chambering for an Extreme range plinker. It can be superbly accurate and provides lots of velocity without needing to be turned to #11.

This now what I use when I want to reach out to a mile and beyond. The 6.5 can do it but the 7mm is that much easier.

I would expect to see around 1000rds of accurate life from a 7mm magnum. For a match rifle, that is brutal bore life.

Also, have a look at the 7-300WSM. that has proven to be both accurate and easy to tune.

Enjoy...

Jerry
