Why not the Ruger American LRT

I see everyone and their mothers all shoot Cz, bergara and vodoos for competitions. Why doesn't it seem that no one shoots the Ruger american LRt? I mean it comes with a ton of features at a great price point. Are the other options that much better? I am so close to pulling the trigger on the Ruger. So please tell me why not to buy one.

Great looking guns, arguably one of the nicest-looking bolt action rimfires Ruger has ever made. $830-$860-ish before tax in Canada=that kind of budget opens-up allot of possibilities. Used Anschutz territory, new Tikka/CZ etc.

I've never shot that model of Ruger so I can't comment on the accuracy of it. CZ/Tikka/Anschutz etc. are widely believed to be among the most accurate rimfire factory guns at their price points, so speaking for myself...I'd need some convincing to spend that much on a Ruger. Doesn't mean it's not a superb gun, just might feel like a bit of a risk comparatively speaking.

Buy one and let us know, I'd be interested in seeing some load tests.

Barrels... barrels... barrels.

If the factory barrel doesn't shoot, is it easy to change? and does it make economical sense?

I compete with a Ruger... but it is a 10/22 and THAT makes a whole lot of sense.

A buddy of mine ran a Ruger Precision 22 for rimfire PRS for a season, it worked great and he won matches. No reason the LRT would not work too, it looks real comfy to shoot. I just grabbed a Ruger American with the 16" barrel at Bullseye, they have a sale right now so i thought I would take a chance on it. Mine will primarily be used for whacking tree rats and quill pigs at the cabin--they are chewing the place to the dam ground! Time to wage war.

The LRT I have is very accurate. Is it more accurate than my CZ457VPR? Unfortunately for the purposes of this post, the weather hasn’t been warm enough to take both out to the range and test them out side by side. I also have a T1X which I’ve set into an MDT Oryx chassis but still waiting for the scope rail to setup the scope and get the Tikka out to the range to shoot it. I am presumptuously hopeful that it is as accurate at the 457. I’m shooting long range precision with the CZ and hitting target at 375m using SK Rifle Match. The Ruger like RWS. Don’t know about the Tikka yet. However the Ruger is a well built accurate platform and I would have no issue using it for competitions. I had a Ruger Precision Rimfire which was also very accurate but sold it, only due to wanting to settle into one rifle for competition….but that was last year.

I've been eyeing the LRT since it was avail.
Still haven't pulled the trigger on one because I have a MKii TR that shoots CCI SVs lights out and space in the cabinet is limited to just one more.....

I like (the look of) em, I love my Ruger Am. Pred. but ultimately the Tikka's lower price (on sale Jan 4), better accuracy (according to online reviews) and not using 10/22 mags won me over. I don't like how those mags feel - not to say the T1's any better....I was after a bench gun to shoot for group sizes, not look or fun or company affiliation.

What does the word "Precision" mean with regard to the name of the model? Is it because it's capable of especially good precision?

Or is it essentially a reminder of its similar looking centerfire brother, the Ruger Precision Rifle?

It’s a game to get us all to buy more guns. I don’t really need it, but I want it. LOL

Platform is generally heavier to allow steady shots, heavy barrel, adjustable trigger, adjustable stock, polished action, factory installed Picatinny scope rail, threaded barrel to fit tuner or brake, fore-end M-Lok capability to mount bipod, possible aluminium or aluminium bedded chassis as a list of features that may come with a particular model.

Lemme know how it shoots CCI CV once you get it

I have one with lots of CCI SV through it. I does about 0.5-0.75" at 50 and 1.5-2.0" at 100, depending on how good of a day I'm having. I've not yet tried it with better ammo as availability of better ammo seems to be the real challenge these days. I'm running a 5-25x Vortex Strike Eagle on top of it.

How many rounds of CCI (approx) any failure to extract or eject?

I think it's been around 2k rounds so far. I had failures to extract originally when I first got the rifle. Ruger replaced the extractor and the retaining clip and they were reduced but not totally eliminated. I had a good look at the extractor design and it's just a piece of stamped metal. So, you have to make sure the hook is really sharp for it to do its job properly. I did that and it's a lot better provided I keep the chamber clean with a chamber brush in between 250rd range sessions.

I would love to see someone offer an aftermarket extractor that is precisely cut from a piece of precision steel that doesn't "clock" in the extractor slot, similar to what's offered by Kidd for the 10/22 platform. The overall lack of precision of the factory-made part and the clocking that can happen in the slot contributes to its inconsistent performance.

In contrast, I have two friends with Ruger Precision Rimfire rifles that have a very similar design and their rifles work flawlessly. So, I wonder if the LRT just has a slightly tighter chamber which makes reliable extraction that much more challenging.

Otherwise, I love the rifle, it's looks, and the value it offers compared to setting up something similar in a Tikka T1X or CZ 457. Plus, the convenience of using 10/22 mags is awesome as I also enjoy that platform immensely.

Any chance the extractors from the other Ruger platforms fit?

Common problem with MkIIs and solution is to double up on the spring and clips around the bolt... any chance that could help? Sounds like not enough tension on the extractor

Or too much lip around the chamber.

The extractors from the RPR looked very similar to the one in my LRT. I didn't ask to try it though as I didn't want to mess with a buddy's rifle that was working well. On my LRT, the lip around the chamber looks reasonable. Though, you can see where the extractor left a mark so there is definitely some contact.

The main issue is the extractor is stamped steel that is thinner than the channel cut in the bolt to hold it. The tip is very narrow, more so that that on a 10/22 extractor, which doesn't leave a lot of material to bite into the case.
