Why oh why can't someone make a DM kit for a Ruger M77

I know why!

they don't want to make it because you will ##### when you have lost the mag, and then can't find one because it's hunting season and no one has it in stock. seen it about 10 times last season. Now you will have a single shot..

hind sight is 20/20

and if you reload, having a detachable mag in the M77 could limit the ability to lengthen bullet seating to the optimal seating depth that your rifle shoots best, especially an aftermarket kit.
Not all detach mags constrict the ability of the reloader to lengthen the bullet seat depth, but most do, use the space that you've got.

Also on one of my sheep hunts, one of the guys forgot his mag in the truck, which was 5 hours back down the Klappan River, so he now had a single shot for the entire trip, luckily for him I'm nice guy and took the canoe back down the river to go get him his mag, paddling back up that river in the rain was a ##### by myself, so every stroke I cursed his name lol

I like the M77 just the way it is, can't lose a mag that way. That's my two cents.

It's your call good luck.

in the rain, by yourself, without him even helping paddle?

most people i know would have said 'welcome to the wonderful world of single shots' and that would have been the end of it :pirate:

that said i dont mind the lack of mags on the Rugers. its the lack of iron sights on most of them - and on most guns in general - that bugs me.

DM's are great especially i'f you're road hunting, but to my mind they're one more thing to go wrong -such as not seating properly under stress, etc. For instance, if you're driving along and you see a big bull moose on the side of the road, it's a lot faster to throw a single round in the chamber and close the bolt after you've left the vehicle, plus it'll force you not to rush your shot..

I too have looked for a detachable mag conversion for my M77 7mmRM, no luck.

an old hunting partner of my dad's had his m77 converted by a 'smith' but it looked like crap and did not chamber well.

I just live with it now as the m77 is now just the backup mid caliber rifle to my savage 300WM and tikka 25-06. Good to have choices

"...the lack of iron sights on most of them..." That's a marketing thing. There's no demand for iron sights. The manufacturer's know that most hunting rifles will be scoped, so they don't go to the added expense of putting iron sights on their stuff.
As daft as it sounds, a detachable mag actually weakens the stock. It also adds to the manufacturing cost.

i scope most of mine as well... but its nice to know if you take only one rifle on a hunt and something goes wrong with your scope you can just remove the scope (almost all of mine are on QR mounts) and continue with irons.

although there is one good thing about it - the iron sights i inevitably get a smith to install on my rifles are of higher quality than the crap that ships on factory rifles anyway. i just wish a couple of the major gun manufacturers gave us more choices in guns with quality iron sights. Ruger would be ideal, because all of their scope mounts are quick release, so after you remove the scope there are no picatinny rails, QR bases, etc on them to snag.

You mean like this?

Those are the same sights I have on my old Tang safety Ruger 77. They are of excellent quality and construction.

Well, these ones aren't too bad.;)

Actually, I had a smith install these factory Ruger sights on my new(ish) MKII in 350 Rem Mag. I am very happy with how it turned out.

As for the detachable mag, I like not having to worry about forgetting or loosing one.

close. ideally id like to see receiver sights, with the base of the rear sight partly integrated into the receiver so that its a bit lower profile. they have the perfect setup right there - you just remove the scope with a coin or swiss army knife in a few seconds, and you are left with quality iron sights.

its a real shame that only one out of ten people these days actually see the value of having iron sights on a rifle :(

stanway - those look really good.

Well I recently had a Remmy 700 BDL DM SS in 243 that was a REAL TACK DRIVER. Man, I wish I never sold that rifle. But it had a detachable mag that I didn't really care for. At first I thought it was great but then I started to see the negatives involved in a DM. You can lose 'em, forget 'em, drop 'em, all a real pain in the a$$.

I have had lots of Rugers too, and I love their hinged floor plate system. They are real good shooters too, in spite of what some people say!
