Why so few 40.6cm / 16inch barrel options for CZ455s and 457s?

Hi there

I'm in the market for a .22LR, I have always enjoyed CZ rifles and would like one of their 455 and 457 rifles. However for some reason the absolute vast majority of options are 20inch long barrels. The 16 inch barrel variants I've seen for sale all seem to have Bull barrels, which to me just isn't neccesary and takes away from weight loss of going from 20 to 16. It just seems very strange to me that the options appear so limited.

All I want is a CZ 457 synthetic which currently retails for $480 but with 4 inches less of barrel. That really doesn't seem like to strange a request.

Is there a reason for this?

Just have a reputable smith cut it and recrown for you. It will be a little extra cost but will give you what you want for relatively low cost. Give Guntech a shout and im sure he will help you out. Ive heard a lot of positive comments from his customers.

Is it not illegal to trim a barrel below 18"?

Legal to buy a 16" barrel and put it on but illegal to trim, gotta love Canadian gun laws.

We're talking at least a couple hundred dollars, that's not a small cost to me especially when 40cm variants should be readily available given their inherent advantages in all areas

Is it legal for a smith to do it, as it's cutting a *finished* barrel below 18", not manufacturing a new blank to a 16" length? Honest question. The intention of the law and the practical application of it diverged somewhere along the way.
I also agree, I think 16-16.5" barrel length in a light to medium profile would be ideal.

I really preferred 16 inch bbl since I tried them. Snagged two 452 Scouts on the EE. Before prices on Scouts got crazy. Timing is everything. Patience is second.

Haven’t shot the Scouts at 100 meters yet. But at 17 meters, they literally shoot 1 hole groups almost same as the first hole. I have two Savages that made bigger groups. But 17 meters is a joke I know. LOL

Excellent point which I didnt consider. I have a 12" Dlask barrel so sometimes forget about buying and cutting. Thanks for pointing out my blunder

No, that would be illegal. You can have your gunsmith make a barrel from a blank to whatever length you like however.

CZ made a 452 American in 16", with a threaded barrel. I've read that it was for the European market, and @ that length so that when you add a sound moderator, the rifle isn't ridiculously long. They're not common to see for sale, and I'm not sure how many made it to Canada. See pic below. Like any other CZ 452 American, there are no iron sights.

Beautiful gun, but if I had to spend all day shooting a CZ American or a Tikka T1x, the answer would be "Tikka". I recently bought a T1x and opted for the 20" barrel as I have longer-range aspirations...and want to squeeze as much velocity out as possible. Yes...I know the experts say all of the gun powder in a 22LR case is burnt by the time the bullet hits the 16" mark, but still... :)

We all want what we want, but I haven't shot that 16" American in over a year, and the Tikka saw a whole bunch of trigger time this fall. I honestly enjoy shooting the Tikka more, and I love 452s. I think if you bought a 16" T1x, it would cost less than any custom option...and chances are, you'd love shooting it and be pleased with the accuracy.

I've got one of these as well and I love mine, I always thought the 16" barrel made the most sense for a .22lr cartridge, the only reason I'll probably buy another .22 with a longer barrel is if I can find a CZ 452 Lux at some point down the road. As I'd keep that rifle iron sighted the longer barrel and sight radius would make sense for me at that point. I also prefer short barrels in general, none of my rifles in an chambering currently sport more than a 21" barrel.

I've never tried(or actually seen in person) a Tikka T1X, it may very well be the better shooter but I don't shoot matches and have never liked the Tikka centerfire rifles all that much(in large part due to the stocks on the T3 Lite rifles and plastic bolt shrouds) so I doubt I'll be looking to trade up, but then again I also believe in"never say never" : ) Also I wish to heck we could get suppressors for our guns, this 452 would be amazing with one.

I think its a matter of customer perception. I don’t know how many times people have asked me if my 16” 10/22 barrel shoots okay because its a short barrel.

Nice pic 22LRGuy! Which ammo does it like best?

.....good question. lol It's been over a year since I had that rifle out in the sun, I honestly don't remember. :) I'd beat myself up about that, but a year later...my 22LR ammo selection is over 2X the size. (varieties, not volume) It's due for another load testing day. I do remember that it shoots well though. Trigger is very good, and I really like the Leupold Freedom Rimfire scope.

^I never much liked Tikka rifles either, until I tried one. I think the stocks fit nice/feel nice...but are as ugly as a bag of hammers. My T1x shoots so well that I've even toyed with the idea of putting it into an aftermarket chassis...but I can't imagine how the extra cost/weight will make it shoot any better. I'd probably like looking at it more. :)

Whatever the case, I had a very difficult time holding a T1x and then looking at the price tag and thinking; "yeah, that makes sense". However, after 2 outings...I was actually trying to justify getting another one in 16". Then common-sense kicked in. lol

Well, I get that. Gotta say, casting my own bias aside, I have never heard anyone knocking the accuracy of Tikka's, I only ever hear people praising them for that and it sounds as though that extends to their rimfire rifles as well.

Tenda has listed a 16.5" 457 ProVarmint. Nice looking rifle......
