Hi majormarine,
The short stainless lever is my 16" Puma .454 Casull. I picked that up about 2 years ago used because the previous owner was not impressed with the recoil. Unfortunately, the .454 no longer comes in a 16" barrel. However, the .44Magnum still does come with the 16" barrel. The shorter blued carbine is my Rossi .357. also in a 16" barrel. I believe Gary at Wanstalls (a sponsor here) can still get the .44Mag, and the .357 Mags both in 16" barrels.
I prefer the Rossi levers myself as they do not have that silly safety lever on the bolt. However a competent Gunsmith can remedy that problem very fast. I am having the one on my .454 removed right now. On the other hand, I found these Rossi/Pumas a great deal for the money. They are reliable and the lever action are the smoothest of all my carbines. About 5 years ago when I put these carbines together, the basic rifle was about $500, and the loop was about $80. Much more affordable than the ones I've seen made by Puma now for over $1200?...
I have 4 Rossi/Pumas and have put 1000's of rounds through them with out any issues except for the little 454 where the screw-in magazine tube's thread weakened. (Since I had to get that addressed, it is currently being worked on for the safety.)
Here is my favourite rig combo:
None of my carbines originally came with large levers. I used to order the levers directly from PUMA/Legacy Sports out of Vegas. Mind you... This was over 5 years ago! You might want to give them a shout to see if they will still ship them. However, last I heard, Gary at Wanstalls was able to bring in the loops.
Finally, to answer M1shooter, I cut the skeletonized stocks in my shop. Here is another one of my creations:
This mossberg currently has a 24" upland barrel, but will soon be fitted with a 20" Factory barrel complete with 3 chokes.
The reason I made the Winchester and Mossberg is because my friend and I had been talking about an ultralight firearm that can be accompanied for a very long trip in the wild. Both the Winchester and Mossberg can be picked up with my pinky yet the Winchester can fire a full house 30-30, and the Mossberg a 12gauge 3" round. As for performance... I can regularly hit the 200m gong at the club with the Winchester without any problems. I have played 10 rounds of Trap with the Mossberg and it hits point of aim.
Hope that helps,
w.w.w.
