why won't the rings close tight?

I'm new to the world of optics, so this may be a silly question. I picked up a mount with 30mm rings for my Milliet DMS that has a 30mm tube. The rings will not close all the way around the tube...there is maybe 1 or 2mm of space between the upper and lower rings. The optic is on tight, but the space bothers me. Is this an issue?

thx

Nope, not at all, and you will see this small gap, (should be even on both sides), on just about every ring/scope mounted, this actually insures a tight fit.

If the rings touched, and by chance the tube of the scope was slightly smaller, you would never be able to tighten it enough to prevent the scope from moving.

It ensures that any 30mm rings will fit on any 30mm scope tube regardless of manufacuring tolerances and finish(paint). The gap is normal just ensure its even on both sides and don't over tighten your rings.

2mm would be a pretty big gap. I'd put the caliper to the scope and see what it reads. Then bring the scope to the store and try some other rings.

just took a good measurement...its almost a 3mm gap. I'm gonna take the scope out and try to reinstall later today. I'll try applying more even pressure to the screws...one side at a time and see if that will make a difference.

Thanks for all the great information!

Just make sure the gap is even on both sides. A 3mm gap on one side and no gap on the other is really bad. Loosen one side and tighten the other until there is a 1.5mm gap on each side. Also, if you're worried, take pics and post them. It's always easier to determine whether there is a problem or not if one can actually see it.

Whew... was worried I'd come back and read about a crushed tube!

As mentioned, EVEN spacing is the key. Glad you got it sorted out! :)

TPS rings will have a larger gap on 1 side. Both sets of mine did.

TPS rings require you to tighten one side (marked) all the way tight before tightening the off side with a gap usually remaining. This is by design. This may apply to other tac rings as well, so read the instructions.

I always read the instructions. :)

I mounted my DMS 1-4x scope (30mm tube) using the following mount as suggested by people here. Fits like a glove - no gaps. :)
