why

In 1987 Winchester ceased importation of their Japanese shotgun models 23 and 101. For a short period the guns were still manufactured under new owners and imported under the name " Classic Doubles". There were few changes from the original Winchester stamped models.

I have a " Classic Doubles 101 Skeet " that is a very nice gun and I'd rate it as good as my Citori. Has 27.5" ported barrels and very nice wood.

Also in the rack is a Winchester 101 kolar tubed four gauge lightweight that again is every bit as good as my Citori Sporting.

I very much disliked Winchesters " Supreme " over/unders and wouldn't run out to buy one of their newly released 101"s as " in my opinion " they are selling the Winchester name and not the quality that was in the original 101 line. I'd like to know where that one is being imported from.

The gun that's available now isn't the traditional 101. It's the Winchester Select o/u done up to look like the older 101.

I've owned both 101s and Citoris and while very similar there are certain differences. The bottom of the 101 receiver isn't open like the Citori and the 101 had mechanical triggers while the Citori uses inertia triggers.

Here is a link about the 101 and the history of Winchester's period in Japan.
