= ocular ... but we all know what woodsman was describing.rear objective lens
It has a larger rear objective lens giving you a bigger field of view. If you have a bolt action, make sure it clears your bolt handle.
...A guy in a gun store told me that if I buy a 50mm objective versus a 40mm objective in a scope I will get a better or a wider field of view
...
it isn't as simple as that....a 40mm obj. scope @ 4X AND 2 inches of eye relief "can" have a wider field of view than a 50mm obj. scope @4x AND 3 inches of eye relief. Do a search on the term "optical triangle" for some insight into the complexity of your question....then pick scopes in your budget and compare their FOV/Power/Eye Relief to select what you want for YOUR rifle (or airgun, shotgun, crossbow, rimfire or 416 Rigby)...
... for this type of shooting FOV isn't too critical assuming the varmints aren't running coyote's at close ranges ...Doing some target shooting and some varmint shooting
