Went hunting Friday and Saturday up around Dauphin. The weather was great and as always the Mother in Law was cooking some great food for us.
Did some rattling on friday around 14:30 and a small spike buck came out. He was around 250m away in some dog woods and I asked her if she could make the shot. She didn't think so and the deer jumped back in the woods. Not 30 seconds later he came back out and started trotting right in our direction. Around 100m away from us I told her to aim a bit forward and let him have it. She missed because the deer stopped just before she shot. He didn't even flinch! Just stood there now looking right at us. She worked the bolt and put another one in the chamber just like we practiced. She shot again and this time she got him. A little far back (liver and guts) but he dropped dead on the spot. Didn't even flinch. 375 H&H with 270gr @2750fps TSX layed the smack down with authority. This was only her second deer. She shot a doe last year at around 50m with a 7mm RM. Cleaning the deer and getting it out took the rest of the day. I saw a nice 8 point the next day that came out again to rattling but he decided to go in the bush and not come out again so I couldn't get a shot at him. Still got some hunting left though so I hope to tag one yet.
Just thought I'd share this. She was so happy and excited when she shot him. She's definatly a keeper. Can't ask for better then a wife that comes hunting!
Take care.
