Hi CGN,

My fiance wants to go to the range and start shooting with me, especially the AR15. However, it comes with one condition, I got to reduce recoil (shes a wee thing) on it, so, what is the best way to do so before going to muzzle brakes?

At that point, which muzzle brakes are the best?

Thanks!

Not to rain on your parade, but if you add a heavy duty muzzle break, you may create another problem... She may not like to shoot the gun because of the muzzle blast AND NOISE!!!

223 does not have much in the way of recoil. Did your wife have a previous bad experience where someone gave her a heavy kicking gun to shoot, thinking it was funny???

Good on ya for trying to solve the problem, I do hope you get it sorted for her. Double up on ear protection if you go the route of the muzzle break... Ear plugs AND ear muffs...

Cheers
Jay

Sounds like some douche nozzle scared her before hand either giving her a heavy recoil arm or drilling it in her head as so.

My girlfriend is only 110lbs and she finds .223 boring recoil wise, it really is extremely mild and is so on purpose.

Your recourse is .22lr like others have said and build from there when she is ready in my opinion.

That's definitely a thought. Any recoil absorbing buttstocks on the market?

Some A-hole did scare her off, she likes the 22 but is nervous about the .223

I am sure she will acclimate just fine to it, as it is very mild but shes nervous as shes 5'11" and 135 lbs, and feels that without recoil absorbing tech, she might get bounced around too much.

if you reload, you can use H4895 reduced to 60% of the max load for the bullet of your choice and believe me, the recoil is next to nothing.
might not cycle the gun though.

she shoots a 10/22 with no troubles, and wants to move up as she loves the looks and feel of the AR, but is intimidated (for now) by the recoil.

Once she feels I've tamed it down a bit, she'll be game to try it. That shoulder pad might be the best thing though, as it requires no modifications, and she can drop it when shes ready (or not)

Put a single round in the mag and get her to hip shoot it at a berm, once they see there is no recoil it's game on.

I shot mine one handed to reinforce the "no recoil" statement... Shortly there after I was tinkering with another rifle and the missus came over asking for more ammo... I asked her what she did with the 250 rounds I had brought... Lesson learned I guess.

If she's sensitive to the lack of recoil an AR has (yes that's what it's called), she won't be pleased with the blast of a muzzle break.

Id just change the flash hider and tell her the new one reduces recoil and then make a fuss over how great it works. Chances are its just in her head and doing that will get her confidence up and she will be good to go.
