Wild accuracy on my 10/22 - what could be the cause?

BTW~just re-read this. What is your hesitation to use the grooved receiver for mounting a scope? Compatible rings? There are VERY solid dovetail-to-Weaver adapters out there if you have Weaver rings your're set on http://www.dlairgun.com/Mounts/BKL/065_568MB_4_Long_Adaptor_Mount.html but I also use BKL and Leupold rimfire rings with success.

Yes, Marlin 60s (like the 795 I own) have a grooved receiver for this purpose. Most scope rings sitting in stores are for weaver bases (like the screw-on 10/22 one) but you can buy rings meant for grooved receivers. There are others (like Leupold) but I like BKL. What I'm wondering here is if the 10/22 was new when you bought it? If so and you have never taken it apart how did you properly clean the shipping grease out of it? Did you use brake clean or another grease cleaner in the barrel? Bore cleaner is useless for this purpose. Have you tried a variety of ammo and not hyper-velocity, ie American Eagle, CCI Standard, Blazer or my new favorite Federal Auto Match?
My advice would be to completely disassemble the rifle, clean it and lube it properly? Put it back together making sure you tighten but not over tighten all the bolts and screws and then start testing ammo. You will find one it likes but you will never find one that makes it a target rifle.

Oh yeah, you will need to do the above to any new gun you buy, it's not 10/22 specific:)
 
It's highly unlikely that you have any leading in a .22. Velocities aren't high enough.
How many brands of ammo did you try? All .22's require you to try as many as you can to find the ammo your rifle(applies to handguns too) both shoots well and cycles the action. Moreso with the assorted hyper-velocity ammo.
 
Quorum, definitely try some different brands of ammo. Did you see in the video you linked to, at 6:43 - a switch to a different ammo reduced his group size by a considerable amount. The shooter also describes himself as "not that good", but you can definitely see that his groupings were improving by the end of the video.

the groupings the guy above did is what I did with the 10/22. So I think I'll go with a bolt action.

I think the 22lr is really boring to shoot, and therefore the only thing interesting to do with the round is to get sub-moa groupings or shoot pennies, gophers and stuff like that. In other words, a bolt action sounds like a reasonable way to do that.

Just sell the Ruger and research a new bolt .22. Lots of good shooters out there.

Why d&t?? I have a scope on my 60. Just used burris rimfire rings.

Marlin XT 22 comes drilled and tapped ready for bases, or you can get a really robust picatinny base, not sure from where, but google is your friend on that one. That said, I use rimfire rings on the small dove tail slot and its a VERY accurate setup.
 
My CZ Farmer has rimfire rings on the dovetailed receiver, and it has been through 2 years of beating strapped to the front of my quad, and hasn't moved, or even lost zero.

All comes down to the quality of the rings...

Warne 7.3/22 Rings are my recommendation!

It's been strapped to the front of your Quad for two years! Aren't you worried someone might steal it?:p
Kidding aside, Warne does make nice rings.
