Anyone have any experience with any of these? Thinking of trying one on a Marlin 1895 platform or possibly a bolt action:sniper: Another possibility would be a 33 WCF improved. If loaded to the pressures the Marlin safely operates at any of them should tread pretty close on the heels of some bolt action cartridges that are well established, with the flat nose bullets being more of a factor than velocity possibilities. Any thoughts??

There was recently an article in Precision Shooting concerning the .35-45-70 and it looked like a promising round. Another option would be the old .348 Winchester. I'm not sure there would be enough powder capacity in the .45/70 case to produce the ballistics one would hope for with a .375 or .416 bore, particularly in a bolt gun, although the .375-284 in a Savage 99 was interesting.

Someone did make a 45-70 necked to .416 it's in Cartidges of the World.........................and a 9.3 x .444 for pistol single shots as well..Harold

Which like the 40-65 and 33 WCF were based on the 45-70 cartridge.
Several people seem to have the 45-70 necked up to .475 , Turnbull, Reeder, and JDJ, maybe more. I'm looking more to necking down than up.

Ok then, does anybody have any experience with the plain old 38-56 or 33 WCF? Regan Nonneman is the U.S. will rebarrel your 1886 win or model 71 or Marlin 1895 or 336. to these calibres as well as .50 Alakan in some. Here's the link: http://www.leveractions.com/leveractions.htm Has some pics of Afican plains game taken with the 38-56. I would assume he's not using BP!!!

I have shot the 38-56 a moderate amount but with black powder or sometimes with smokeless loads that mimic the black loads. I have a fast twist barrel in a rolling block that allows me to use 300 grain Loverin style bullets and like the caliber a lot. Minimal recoil with black powder, particularly compared to calibers like the 45-120 which is downright uncomfortable. I have recently changed to a short version of the 40-65 bottleneck which allows me to use 45-70 shells rather than the much more expensive 45 basic brass. Have not had time to play with it however.

The 38-56 would hold more powder but from what I've been
seeing it was only loaded commercially with black powder and
never really achieved its potential.:(
The improved version would be a serious butt kicker I think IMHO:eek:

And this one with all the .357 bullets available for plinking and hunting
intrigues me as well.

Maybe have to buy a barrel and a reamer for one or the other and find out:D
