Wildcatting a 7.62x39

The 7.632x39 case is rather tapered. An AI version, with a sharper shoulder, and straightened body, set up for .308 bullets might be a nice little round. Shouldn't be hard to boost velocities to more useful levels.
The catch is the cost of the experiment. A custom ground reamer isn't cheap, and dies would have to be special ordered.

Since mine is going in a bolt action originally designed for the 308 at 65000 PSI, I certainly plan on exceeding published 7.62x39 loads intended for the SKS and a much lower pressure (~45000 IIRC).

I forsee no problems hitting (or slightly exceeding) 30-30 velocities

With the long heavy for calibre bullets and a fast twist you can get incredibly high ballistic coefficients. The .228 bore gives you some extra room to play with such a long bullet. The high B.C. will give better wind deflection, and a much more stable flight at long range, also velocity doesn't drop off as fast. So any round shooting super high B.C. bullets will have a flatter trajectory, and more stable flight. This all goes to improved accuracy potential. Also the higher a ballistic coefficient the better penetration will be once it gets to the target.
They shoot moose with the .22 savage Hi-power in Europe, and it is a .228 cal cartridge.
Not saying it is something I am going to run out and build tomorrow, but has possibility written all over it...

4.32x39mm would be cool (.17 cal), but it's a big jump. It'd look like a mini-WSM cartridge :D I'd like to try 6mmPPC, I've never read anything bad about it. Cheap brass is available from Marstar, and in a bolt gun or single shot NEF any chamber/barrel combo you can think of is possible. Do it up, and post pics!
