Will .312 work in the 7.62x 39?

I know that you are supposed to use .311 bullets when reloading for the 7.62 x 39 SKS. How about .312? I was given a box of Hornady bullets originally intended for a .303 rifle. They are .312 in diameter. Would they be safe to reload for the 7.62 x 39? Anyone used them before?

Theoretically it should, depending on the weight of the bullets. Why don't you slug your barrel and find out? It's really easy to do. Check www.surplusrifle.com for a good article with lots of photos.

And the fact that you're willing to reload for an SKS before you're willing to reload for an Enfield is sick! Sick, sick sick! To the madhouse with you!

I'd be more worried about the bullet weight and profile.

If it's a tiny hollowpoint or protected tip and under 150gr, you should be good to go.

My excuse

My only excuse is that I am doing it for my son who hates using corrosive ammo! (We also found factory ammo shot better so we are going for the best groups we can.)

The guys are right, slug the bore. It's easy to do. I have slugged a few and was rewarded by finding out that the old bore was roomier than I had previously thought.

I used to reload for SKS all the time, but I shot 160 gr cast. Only mold I could find, shot great though, and more accurate than that corrosive crap! My SKS was a Norinco SKS-D. The barrel slugged at .312". You'll find most all Russian guns and copies are 310"-312". So provided you're bullets arn't too heavy or long you should be OK. There are loads listed for 150 and 125 gr. bullets.:) The Ruger mini-30 has a 308" bore I believe, and they shoot 311-312 Russian out of them all the time:eek: Talk about your pressures! the rule of thumb is bullet and bore diameter the same with FMJ, and bullet about 1 or 2 thou over for cast.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input. I managed to find some Hornady 7.62 123 gr. PSP's that are .310 in diameter. Got several boxes for a good price. I will still slug the bore as some of you suggested so I can determine if I can use those .312 bullets eventually. The Hornadys are a better solution all around but it will be interesting to see what the actual barrel diameter is.
