Will a 50mm scope work on a short barrel 16.5” rifle ?????

Hello NUTZ

Recently purchased a Remington model seven. With a 16.5” barrel
Came with a nice 20moa rail(mounted properly) and kuiu stock...what a beauty !

Also got a sweet new Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50mm
With Medium mounts

Here’s my issue:

Mounted the scope, leveled and adjusted in a gun vice
Removed bolt and bore sighted to 25m....aiming high I adjusted the elevation to its bottom most setting

I’m about 8-10” high with the elevation bottomed out.
Replaced mounts with LOW mounts. Still high but 6-8”

Anyone else with a short barrel rifle experience this issue ?
Is it the scope should I run a 40mm?
Or the short barrel or maybe the 20 moa rail ?
Am I overlooking something?

I’ve tried to google it without much luck
Also Called Nikon they weren’t sure either and offered me a new scope lol

****update****

So basically what happened was the “medium” rings I had...turned out to be HIGH rings and when I switched to what I thought were “low” rings were actually MEDIUM. I dummy that one!

Picked up actual LOW rings and it’s setting much lower....maybe even to low but I was able to sight it in no issues. I’ve posted new pics.

Does the scope look to close to the barrel now?
I’ve heard the closer the better without touching...but can’t confirm that’s true or not.

Dumb question. Is there any chance you turned the elevation turret the wrong way therefore setting the reticle at maximum height ?
Some of the older hunting style scopes were marked Up with an arrow but in reality this move the reticle down to change trajectory.
I have zero experience with Nikon scopes but thought it worth asking.
A plus 20MOA rail will work on any rifle the same so assuming your scope has more than 50 MOA of total elevation. Barrel length is not part of the equation.

Did you shoot it at 100 yards or is the 6 to 10 inches high all bore sighting?

I suggest a large target at 100 yards and shoot it. Then maybe replace the 20moa rail with normal bases and appropriate height rings.

You have too much elevation built in to the rail that is mounted. The scope does not have enough internal adjustment and cannot compensate. It has nothing to do with objective lens size, just the internal erector assembly and its adjustment range. It also has nothing to do with rifle barrel length, other than the fact that extremely short barrels like yours are not usually chosen for long range shooting. Putting a rail with 20 MOA built in elevation on an extremely short barrelled carbine is a mismatch of rifle design and the purpose of the rail base. You will not need extreme long range scope adjustment capabilities with your little carbine, so replacing your long range target rail with a neutral rail will solve your problem. Or keep the long range 20 MOA rail and replace the scope with a 30 MM tube model with more internal adjustment.

You switched from medium rings to low rings and you were able to sight in? That doesn’t seem right as the height of the ring shouldn’t have any effect on that.

Sounds like there is an issue with your medium rings.
