Will a Glock 17 last a shooters life time? and How many life times will it survive?

The 1911s that last a shooter's lifetime don't get 1000 rounds a month for that duration...

Kyle Defoor put 200,000 rounds through a G17 not that long ago. Lots make it over 100,000.

Considering the average gun owner who actually shoots still probably puts less than 500 rounds a year through their most used gun (real rounds, not e-rounds, I know everyone here shoots at least 500 e-rounds a month while e-losing their e-virginity at 13 to the smoking hot 18 year old babysitter and winning about 100 e-fistfights) that works out to about 200 years of service for most people.

To put round counts in perspective, the 1911s that the FBI HRT used (and to a very limited degree, continue using, although most of the HRT units are also shooting Glocks now) were very good quality 1911s...and 1. they needed total rebuilds (2. often including frame replacement - so new pistols, essentially) generally around 25-35,000 rounds.

So a Glock 17 will outlast the vast, vast majority of pistols. If a Glock 17 is not enough durability for you, you could look in to a USP...that would be the only pistol I can think of that might have a longer service life, although I don't know that it does. It may.

Effectively, if a G17 is not enough, neither is anything else.

That's hilarious - e-virginity. You kill me.

I will call a conditional BS on the rebuilds for HRT @ 1. - not the fact that they had to be re-built but I don't think frame replacement was necessary. I have acquaintances on the FBI who carry 1911 (SWAT not HRT) and have never had a rebuild in 20 years or so.

I think the issue with HRT is the crazy accuracy requirement specified in the contract. I've seen USCG 1911's with multiple rebuilds on frames from the 40's and they still shoot great...

I do have to say that I pretty much have to agree with everything else you stated. I have a G23 that's well over 25K and a G17 with close to 90K - one broken extractor in the G23, changed the recoil spring after every 10K, all original parts in the G17, recoil spring changed every 20K. Like LAV states - "If you're going to treat your pistol like your lawnmower get a Glock"...

Not all frames were replaced but many were, per Ken Hackathorn.

Quote: "you bought twenty five hudred dollar pistols, and you put twenty five thousand dollars worth of ammo through them...yeah, they're ####ing shot out."

Some were rebuilt on the same frames, however. I did not mean to imply that all frames were destroyed.

I've always been intrigued by how many rounds a pistol can take before the frame or slide will break or crack. I have between 115K and 120K on my Glock 22 that I bought back in 2000. Most of the rounds have been reloads but for the last couple of years I've been shooting factory.

I've had two extractors, two slide stop levers and one trigger pin break and they were replaced by me (Glock's are so easy to work on). I replace my recoil spring every 5K as was suggested by a high volume shooter.

A couple of years I managed to get 20K of training in. Other years not so much. My goal is to shoot so many rounds that my Glock "dies" and I can brag about and put some pictures on glock talk.com or here. I doubt I will accomplish my goal for another decade or so. "Off the official record" that he could be held to, I was told by a Glock representative that he expects my .40 will last a minimum of 250K but my barrel will likely need to be replaced anytime now. I haven't noticed any signs of decreased accuracy and until then I'm not replacing anything.

Employees at indoor ranges who rent guns have told me that the Glocks do last a long time and they could only take wild guesses how many rounds theirs had down range. One range told me their Sig's lasted longer than Glocks but I have some doubts about that.

What I can say for sure is that aside from some small parts breaking I expect your 9mm glock to last at least 250K unless something weird happens.

Here is a link to Chuck Taylor shooting 250K through his 9mm Glock:
