So I aquired a rifle that has been spray painted:rolleyes: and I want to strip it down to it's original finish. Would paint thinner do the trick or will i mess up the parking? Thanks

Paint thinner will generally not remove paint, it is for thinning only. It is just mineral spirits. I suggest methylene chloride based paint stripper. The only common thing that will remove park is abrasion or acid.

Acetone will often soften paint and cause it to lift so that it can be wiped away. It depends on what sort of paint was used. If it's one of the 'kote gun paints they should be more resistant and may require the actual paint stripper mentioned above. After all gun cleaning solvents are pretty strong and a proper gun paint has to be able to resist those.

Yes Lacquer thinner is the best and most commonly available product, we use it in the shop for degreasing guns and cleaning spray paints off before sandblasting. Let the receiver soak in a metal tub for awhile and use a soft quality plastic brush(toothbrush works but small) to scrub the tight spots out. If yo uare to clean any plastics with it test a small area first, for example HK (G3's,Mp5) plastic will melt like butter in seconds when touched buy lacquer thinner.

I just had to do the same thing, and what I ended up doing was scraping it off with a hard piece of plastic. What I used actually was an electrical outlet cover. Spray paint is generally very brittle and really doesn't bond that well to blueing or parkerizing. I used the plastic because I knew it wouldn't scratch the bluing, but it hard enough to take off the paint. Takes a little work, but 1/2 hr or so and I had it looking like new.
