If I go hunting small game with my 22mag? I noticed in my reg books that only .22, .22 short, and .22LR are approved. However, all I (currently :D) have is me .22 mag. To me, it would seem pointless to get their feathers ruffled up, considering some of the Hyper-Velocity .22LR that's actually out there.

On that note, does anyone hunt grouse with a .22?

This is a very good question!

Look at the .17HMR which is a much smaller round with far greater energy, if a C.O. wants to get pissy with you...

And yes, .22lr will do just fine on Grouse.

Interesting question, I would call the MNR for clarification. I can see where you're north of the French so the exclusion, by definition doesn't apply.

In an area where there is an open season for deer, moose
or black bear, if you are the holder of a small game
licence you may not possess or use a rifle of greater
calibre or projectile power than a .22 calibre rim-fire rifle
chambered to .22 short, .22 long or .22 long rifle or shells
loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (or if
using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger
than triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger
than double BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid
licence to hunt deer, moose or black bear as the case may be.
The above does not apply to the holder of a small game
licence, hunting small game only south of the French and
Mattawa Rivers during an open season for deer that is
restricted to the use of bows.

Make sure you aim high to not ruin all that breast meat.

isnt the 22mag slightly larger than .22lr? it definatly has more power so technically if you are caught using a .22mag then you are indeed breaking the law. id say you would get in trouble since a .22mag is capable of killing a deer with a headshot.

The Regulations are clear. You can't use your .22Mag for small game hunting during the big game seasons.
This could be justification to buy another rifle.

i have yet to understand this law myself...

north of the french river you cant use anythign larger than a 22lr because you can use a rifle for deer. yet south of the "line" you can hunt with anything up to 275 calibre as long as its in an area where only bowhunting is allowed for deer.

if people are going to poach they are going to do it whenever they want:rolleyes:

the 22mag canot be used to "harvest" big game. Any big game.
They tried to cover some big-a$$ cartridge - that used to be in the .35 ballpark back in the day and was a rimfire one - with that.

What I would do is call the ministry and get a Conservation Officer on the phone from the area you intend to hunt in, get his word AND name.
This way I found out that handgun hunting is not forbidden in Ontario, as long as the projectile is propelled by air. The rest of the rules apply (encased at dark, unloaded in vehicle....so on), but if one wishes, one could take a pistol up in the bush.

I was speaking only of small game. But like I said, alot of the lower-velocity CCI's I have are actually less powerful when stacked up to certain Hyper-Velocity .22LR.

As I see it right now, it's like them saying "You can't race your Ferrari on the street, but you can whip your turbo'ed Neon around the corners as much as you want."

As well, my 22mag definitely does not in any way qualify for a "deer rifle".:runaway:

know you were only talking about the smaller game. Is just so darn hard to switch to the "advanced" and put all the smilies on.....

I certainly believe that 22mag qualifies for the purpose, otherwise we would have heard of at least one case of "illegal use".
Since there is no precedent in a rich hunting history, we must assume that is OK. I'd still call them up though.

a 22 will take a deer no problem

By all means, call the MNR and get an opinion. Get it in writing.
I wonder if the use of .22WRF cartridges would make a difference in interpretation?

This is meant only for those places where big game is in season with a rifle and you want to hunt with a centre fire rifle or shotgun with larger than bbb for example if you were hunting wolf during the deer season you must posess a valid deer licence in order to hunt wolf with a centre fire rifle. I am sure that you are OK with the 22mag but if you want to be on the safe side contct the MNR get a name and badge number in case another officer stops you and questions it. Unfortunately the laws are open for interpetation depending on the person. But the way I explained it is how it was explained to me by an MNR official. Let us know what you find out!!!!

as long as its under 500fps;) you can use any speed air rifle though.

btw...ive heard stories of poachers and their preferred caliber is the 22 mag when they are spotlighting. id guess that you could easily down a deer at 75 yards or less with a 22mag and a headshot.

specially that ther is no mention about them either.....

Big game animals may only be hunted onli with a firearm.
An air rifle exceeding 500fps is a firearm according to cfc.
are we going to have a bear defence thread with single shot air rifles?

unless you possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose or black bear as the case may be.

So if you have a rifle that is bigger then a 22 and you got a valid license to hunt deer/moose/black bear at the the time if you "happen" to come across a small game animal that is in season and you shoot it your ok ;)

Just take out a Deer/Moose caliber, and make up a bunch of reduced grouse loads in case...much easier then packing another rifle around. :D
