Hey Gents,

Question: Will hand loads from 1990 still be ok to fire? Stored in a dry place, sealed and safe. They are .44 mag pistol rounds, some hot and some target. Just want to make sure they aren't going to cause me any grief if I use them.

Thanks for any insight.

I did read one story of a guy who had made a pile of his pet load years back that when he shot the old reloads they didn't perform the way they should have, but they were better after he put them back in his press and just barely reseated the bullet, he figured that some old oil or something just made his bullets stick to the brass causing pressure variation.

Do you know the powder it was reloaded with????

Some of the older Higginson's surplus powder went bad. I had a bunch of #44 and OEM 4350 (N160) that went bad on me. I had a few hundred rounds of different ammo loaded with those powders and found several of them had contaminated loads that were leaking moisture.

What turned me on to this was the barrel on a favored/very accurate 257 Roberts became very erratic. When I looked down the bore, it looked like someone had taken a hammer to it. Total loss.

If the loads are made up with regular commercial powder, they will be fine unless the ammo hasn't been stored properly at high temps.

Just to make a long story short, I still have some WWII surplus #4831 (H4831) that I still use on a regular basis. I also have primers that were bought new in 1968. They all work just fine.

That old #4831, is still just as consistent as it ever was.
