It will do just fine if you let the geese get close enough. Just don't use the full choke with steel shot. I shoot 3" bb's out of mine. It works all right if the birds get within about 35 yards. Any further and steel really seems to lose its energy.

Your gun will work great for geese. Pull the tube and read the inscription. Mod or more open will work with steel. Remington also offers a special treated full choke that is designed for steel.

I've knocked down dozens of ducks and geese with my 870 express. I've got a semi-auto now, but I've switched back to the 870. It's reliable. Use your modified tube, or improved cylinder if your shooting ducks over decoys.

That gun will do the job very well; it's what hundreds of thousands of Canadian waterfowlers use.

But there's something even more important to know. The gun doesn't kill the bird, the shooter does. And it appears that you will need to learn how to wingshoot otherwise you will be extremely frustrated come next fall. Buy your gun now, and spend the time until hunting season on the skeet field. Trap won't help you much as training for shooting ducks or geese, but skeet will. Crossing, incoming, and outgoing shots are all presented on the skeet field, which is what you will find if you're shooting over decoys. THAT is how you are going to kill birds, and then the make, model, and action of gun becomes much less important.

You can't kill geese with anything less than a 3 1/2inch Hevi shot shell fired from a Benelli. I thought everyone knew that. Seriously, pattern and practice is what makes or breaks it when they're cupped over the 'coyes. With the newer Expresses work the action a few hundred times to smooth it out.
