Win 140 Barell Length

I have a beaten and battered Winchester 140, and was thinkin of a black shotgun project. Anyone have an idea as to how short you can cut the barell and it still cycle light loads reliably? In theory cutting it to the legal 18.5 will be ahead of the gas ports and should therefore cycle, but I would like to know before I chop er off.

I had my winny 2400 cut down to 20", pretty sure they are identical guns, cycles ####ty walmart ammo without a hiccup
