I was out trying some plinking with my 17 HMR. I had a box of Winchester brand ammo with me. 3 FTF's and 4 stuck and cracked cases out of a box of 50. What's with this stuff ? Has anyone else had similar experiences with this ammo ?

None of those issues but it's been very inaccurate for me. 3" groups on a rifle that's usually under 1" with any other ammo I feed it. I picked up a bunch of it at Sail last year when it was on sale for $9.99 a box. Now I know why it was so cheap.

In my savage 93 TTR, the 17 gr Winny ammo is the most accurate, guess all rifles have their preference... JP.

I'd say the Savage has nothing to do with it...I don't even know why it would be brought up.
My 93FVSS (.22WMR) shoots everything pretty well, Hornady and Rem Accutip the best.
But Winchester...WOW. I'd have 1 or 2 failures EVERY mag. And yes I got some cracked cases as well.
A fellow at the range tried some in his CZ and got exactly the same result.
I've never seen a thread where someone claims the stuff is the best in their rifle.

did you check the cases? were they cracked? win gray x 17 has had a bad reputation for doing what yours did. I sent a case back to win along with many split cases they sent me a coupon to replace it all. I even sent the rifle in for a look over, it was fine. your gun does not like that ammo, don't shoot it in your rifle and don't buy any more of it, win supreme is different and works better, hope this helps.

I found the grey label stuff (20 grn) to be very inaccurate but had no issues with extraction or cracked cases or FTF's. The black label stuff (17 grn) is very accurate and again no issues with it. Seems to me that I have read several threads on here (and/or rimfirecentral) of cracked cases with savages rifles and Winchester ammo so you are not alone. I'd say as long as other brands are fine, don't worry about it and use whatever works for you.

This ammo is very good in my rifle no cracked case and quite accurate, is this the one you are talking about... JP.

Caramel, that grey box is the ammo, lots of troubles with it in many different rifles. It may have been a certain run of it. The varmint is less troublesome. My boys just went through a case of win supreme, not an issue. All ammo run through a Sako quad.

I have yet to have trouble with both boxes, i am up to 3 boxes of each and all were flawless except for one FTF ( gray box) and it went the second time around, maybe there is bad batchs of this stuff, i bought a brick of each... JP.

yes. Is there an issue ?

For some reason, most of the issues that people have had with the Winchester 17HMR ammunition, seems to have been in Savage rifles. I had no issues at all with the Winchester loads in my Cooper, and it was the most accurate load in that rifle.
Below are two five shot 50 yard groups fired with the Winchester Supreme loads.

I found the Win Super X, Varmint HV and Supreme to be rather dirty (carbon fouling) in my rifle, also the accuracy was very bad. No case ruptures or failure to fire to report though. My rifle (T-Bolt) likes the Hornady 17gr VMax and the CCI 20gr Hollow Points. They don't seem as dirty either.

The hornady varmint express with the polymer tip did not work in my savage...

many fte due to the cracked case. I shot half a box and ALL had cracked case. I discarded the box and wont buy this ammo again.

Last year I had a bunch of Winchester 17 ammo of different weights and it was non stop problems.
3 different rifles and all the same issues. FTF, not extracting, split cases.
For me the simple fix is I don't buy any more Winchester ammo for any of my 17's.
