I came across a reblued/ rebored from 40-82 to 45-70 1886 rifle. It also has a modern Lyman peep tapped on the side receiver and an incorrect replacement butt stock. I thought the milder steel used in the 40-82 might not be up to jacketed loads in 45-70?What would it be worth as a shooter? Thanx Harold

Great cast bullet shooter, I'm guessing at $900 as there is no collector value, but a great, historic rifle none the less.

The serial # falls into the modern nickle steel range made in 1898 so I wonder about jacketed loads as well as cast.It comes down to whomever rebored it did a good job or not....I may take it out and shoot it.....................nickle steel began being used in 1895.......Harold

I would say it's worth $600 or $700 as a hunting gun. That's the problem with reworking old guns, once the collector value is gone, you never get your money out of them if you decide to sell them. I don't think I've ever seen a .40/82 '86 that the bore wasn't bad.
