so I've been playing with a load for my 147s and 3.6 seems to work well. but there is no load data from the Hodgon/Winchester site for JHP 147s. why? even Googling didn't turn me up any help.

Rob what are you looking for in a load? Minimum PF or duty ammo? In the 9MM the rifle twist favours 125 gr bullets as you likely know.

I found a bunch of data for 147gr. bullets on Hodgdon's Reloading Data Center, just not for Win231.

Steve recommends from 3.5gr. to 4.3gr. in his pages.

I have been using 4.0gr of w231/hp38, win small primer, 147gr TMJ, OAL of 1.150. chrono at 950fps, out of a STI Trojan. no signs of over pressure. That was with a lite crimp. I have bought a Lee factory crimp die and loaded up 20 with a heavy crimp, but have not had a chance to try them yet to check for signs of over pressure. I had signs of unburned powder with the light crimp an am hoping a heavier crimp will help stop this. The w231/hp38 is also quite dirty, but makes up for it with good groups and light recoil.

From Winchester site.

3.6 seems right.

I tend to favour a little heavier bullet in 9mm. The cast RN I am using is a 130RN made by my friend Rick at R&Rbullets@mountaincable.net. It nets out to around 135 grains.
The 3.6 of 231 is pretty close to the [Aliant's] PROMO [bulk] powder that I currently use. I have found that keeping the FPS lower than 1050 in 9mm increases accuracy with a heavier bullet.

You have to be careful with 231. It being a ball powder should not be compressed. I suspect that may be one reason you don't find a lot of loads for it using the 147 gr bullet.

not even close to a compressed load.
if you note the Winchester data for a 147gr and Win231 is for a lead bullet, not a jacketed one.

Rob the loads for 231 are very limited and I would suggest that is the reason. To drive the jacketed bullet with 231 to speeds some shooters want you could easily get into compressed loads if the bullet were seated to deep. I use 231 exclusively for 124 gr lead bullets. Have no reason to shoot 147 gr bullets unless I want to practice with my Win Ranger SXT's.:D

As you know the 9MM is a high pressure cartridge and it maybe 231 builds pressure to quick in the limited space available in the 9MM case when shooting the 147 gr Jacketed bullets. Has to be one of the two reasons suggested otherwise Win would publish loads for it. No reason not to if were good to use.

According the the second and third editions of the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook

3.5gr - 4.1gr/231 with the 147TMJ.

The second editon says that the 4.1gr is potentially the most accurate.

3.5grn with 145gr LRN in my Sig 226. I've gone up to 3.7 but the pressure signs made me back off.

Lyman's 48th Edition lists the same data as RePete mentioned above.

I'll add:

9mm Winchester 231
147 gr. TMJ 1.115" OAL From a 4" barrel.
3.5 gr. - 855 fps - 23,000 CUP
4.1 gr. - 957 fps - 27,500 CUP

That's a TMJ with a round nose flat point not a JHP so your OAL may be different but powder should be in the ball park.

Tell me if I am close with a guesstimate of about 950-980 fps from a 4.9" Beretta and 3.6 gr. W231 ? OK, I haven't had enough sleep... I might be off.
