I'm interested in limiting the powders I have in the house. I'm interested in loading some 12 guage buck, and slugs. I have hodgdon clays (not universal or international, just clays) and win 231 for my pistols. I know I can use the clays for the 12 guage loads, but it is a fairly fast powder and the velocities would be on the lower end with 1 oz slugs/buck (1200 fps)

Win 231 is slightly slower, between universal and international clays. Would it be possible to load 231 in the 12 guage to try and increase velocity at all?

Are pistol only powders special?

Any ideas on loads? of course i would start low.

Thanks

One of the problems with W231 is that it needs high pressure to burn and especially to burn cleanly. Shotgun pressues are well below that of most handgun rounds, and in the case of very low pressure shotgun loads, it might have trouble burning at all.

I would have a look at the Hodgdon load data for what you want to do. W231 isn't listed there as a powder for shotshells, suggesting instead HS-6 or Universal for use with slugs and other powders for shot.

Check it out here: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

Cheers.

Thats interesting, so I would imagien it might just burn dirty. Hmmmm I may try some light loads and work up if things look ok with my slugs. Worst case, I'll go buy some Universal or something.

Prospector, I have had a look through that data and thats what led me to the question, I just saw win231 on the burn chart between two better powders for slug loads in a 12 gauge so I thought I would ask why there where no loads listed.

Thanks :)
