Hoping the fellas who know a lot about Winchesters can help me out on this one.

Just came into a Winchester 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55. Always wanted to try one of these after hearing a lot of good things, and the chance at one came up. I wanted one with iron sights.

Can't say I ever saw a Winchester 70 with irons like this. It looks to me at least like someone put the sights from a 700 BDL on a Winchester.

Were these ever factory?

Sorry for the pictures, best I can do at the moment

Looking forward to finding out. Betting the rifle originally had no sights on it, but here's hoping a Winchester won't be too insulted nor demeaned by having Remington sights bolted to it!

Thanks for the confirmation. According to google the pushfeeds sometimes came with a folding rear...but nothing like those

Come on people it's a m70 feather weight 6.5......can it get any better

Clearly since it isn't controlled feed, has been abused by having ghastly non factory sights installed and hell the safety probably isn't even 3 position it could all fail and leave you hanging by your boot heels during a dangerous whitetail charge. There for it is woefully inadequate and not worthy of the model 70 name, only those made before 1964 are worthy. Praise be unto Jack O'Connor.

I tell ya what OP, I will take it and dispose of it properly if you're willing to pay shipping.

;)

Even Jack would have to say at least the checkering is not terrible though ;) And with that going for it I will hang onto it.

But if a deer ever charges and I die cursing push feed rifles, I can't say you didn't warn me

Hey gang,
I recently bought a beauty M70 with featherweight stock with iron sights in .270. It is marked as a "Western". The serial number tells my it was manufactured in 1982. It is a very handsome rifle with gold inlay in the lettering. Early couple of trips to the range indicates that it's a good shooter too. It's not 6.5 pounds, though. With bases and rings it comes in at 7lbs 14 oz. not too bad for a long action, walnut stock and iron sights! If I figure out how to post pictures I'll put one up.

"Western" was a model of full sized Sporter type rifle, AFAIK? Perhaps someone inletted it into a featherweight stock?

7 3/4 lbs should be right on for one of those.

Nice rifle!

Hey Joel
From what I can tell there was a short run of pre-64' "Westerner" M70's with a 24" barrel. My rifle has a 22" barrel. I'm pretty sure it's an early 80's M70. I couldn't find much else on the subject from searching google.

Here's a couple of photos of my Model 70 "Westerner". If anyone know anymore about this model, I'd love to hear about it.
